We are currently hiring for Substitute Teachers at both the elementary and secondary levels for the  school year.

Interview Process:

This is a substitute position with no guarantee of hours or days for the  school year.

Salary:
Certificated Substitute Teachers are paid $200/day. Emergency Substitute Teachers are paid $180/day.

  • Substitute/Emergency Substitute Certification issued by OSPI required.
  • Degree not required for Emergency Substitute Teacher Certificate.

Overview

The job of "Substitute Teacher" is to provide continuity of the learning environment in the absence of the classroom teacher. The substitute teacher develops students' academic skills through academic courses of study and implements district-approved curriculum, documents teaching and student progress, addresses specific educational needs, provides a safe learning environment, and offers feedback to students, parents, and administration regarding progress and expectations.

Requirements
  • Proper teaching certification for appropriate level of instruction and/or subjects.
  • Ability to pass a Federal Criminal Background check.
  • Skills to motivate students, communicate with individuals from varied educational and cultural backgrounds, direct support personnel, and evaluate performance.
  • Knowledge of age-appropriate teaching methods, state curriculum framework, education code, appropriate instructional subjects.
  • Willingness to actively support Shelton School District's Strategic plan and initiatives.
  • Willingness to use District issued unit plans, lesson plans, and approved curriculum.
  • Ability to develop and maintain structures and routines that are conducive to an effective, safe, and welcoming environment.
  • Ability to maintain an upbeat, positive, and collaborative demeanor.
  • Ability to develop and maintain professional, positive relationships with students, staff, administrators, families, and the community.
  • Willingness to participate in school and building events and activities.

Essential Functions
  • Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress to support teacher's expectations.
  • Assesses students for feedback to students, parents, and administration regarding progress.
  • Assists other teachers for implementing curriculum.
  • Collaborates with school personnel, parents, and community agencies to improve student outcomes.
  • Demonstrates methods to provide students with necessary skills safely and accurately.
  • Directs instructional assistants, volunteers, and student aides for an effective program.
  • Instructs students to improve academic success through a defined course of study.
  • Monitors student activities to provide a safe and optimal learning environment.
  • Prepares teaching materials and reports for implementing lesson plans and documenting progress.
  • Reports incidents to maintain personal safety and adhere to policies.
  • Assists other personnel as required to support them in completing work activities.
  • Participates in various meetings to receive and provide information.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:

Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods, perform a variety of specialized tasks, maintain records, establish cooperative relationships with students, parents, and other school personnel, meet schedules and deadlines. Physical requirements include lifting, carrying, reaching, handling, talking, hearing, and visual acuity.
