Senior Environmental Compliance Specialist / Environmental Scientist

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Senior Environmental Compliance Specialist / Environmental Scientist based in New York City, NY and other offices throughout our Northeast Region. This role is part of the Earth & Environment Team and will tackle a variety of projects to help clients meet their environmental objectives.

Your Impact
  • Conduct field assignments such as environmental compliance audits, Phase 1 environmental site assessments and inspections.
  • Provide environmental compliance program support for industrial clients, including developing procedures, permits, and preparing & submitting periodic regulatory reports, and delivering environmental training.
  • Develop ISO
    14001 environmental management system (EMS) program support for industrial clients, including program development and auditing.
  • Prepare written and verbal technical reports, documenting audits and investigations, performing regulatory research, and presenting data graphically and tabularly.
  • Manage projects according to client‑approved scopes of work and deliver high‑quality reports on time and within budget.
  • Assist in managing and developing client relationships.
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for measurement accuracy, statistical analysis, and reporting.
  • Comply with safety guidelines and site‑specific procedures, including sample collection, laboratory documentation, monitoring systems, and logbooks.
  • Work with cross‑functional teams to execute project work.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Environmental Policy, Engineering, Earth Science or related discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience with federal, state and local environmental regulations.
  • 5+ years of experience with ISO 14001 EMS guidance.
  • Ability to pass a HAZWOPER physical and wear a tight‑fitting respirator.
  • Experience evaluating and maintaining environmental regulatory compliance in industrial settings.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license.
  • Assignments may involve waste disposal sites and hazardous material cleanup; OSHA‑mandated medical surveillance required.
  • Ability to work in rough terrain and facilities with limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other typical industrial conditions.
  • Subject to client‑mandated drug/alcohol testing policy; employee may be subject to random tests.
  • Up to 50% travel; willing to travel on short notice, including by air or land; overnight travel required.
  • Self‑sufficient, self‑motivated, and able to work under pressure of deadlines.
  • Strong investigative skills and high attention to detail.
  • Clear and concise verbal and written communication; ability to communicate to both scientific and non‑scientific audiences.
  • Capable of managing multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Moderate proficiency with business writing and office automation tools.
  • Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills to analyze testing results and data.
  • Track record of upholding workplace safety and compliance with WSP’s health, safety and harassment policies.
  • Willingness to work schedules beyond the typical workweek to meet project requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree is preferred.
  • Certifications such as Professional Environmental Auditor, Environmental Professional, Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, or related credentials.
  • Experience conducting Phase I environmental site assessments following ASTM International Standard E 1527‑13.
  • Experience with environmental due diligence assessments of roadway and other transportation corridors.
