We are seeking a Senior Environmental Compliance Specialist / Environmental Scientist to join our team in the U.S.

This Opportunity

WSP is currently searching for a Senior Environmental Compliance Specialist / Environmental Scientist for our New York City, NY and other offices throughout the Northeast Region. Join the Earth & Environment Team and help solve client challenges.

Your Impact
  • Conduct field assignments, such as performing environmental compliance audits, Phase 1 environmental site assessments and environmental inspections.
  • Provide environmental compliance program support for industrial clients, including developing procedures and permits, preparing and submitting periodic regulatory reports, and delivering environmental training programs.
  • Develop ISO 14001 EMS program support for industrial clients, including program development and auditing.
  • Prepare written and verbal technical reports, documenting audits and field investigations, regulatory research, data management and interpretation, and develop graphical and tabular presentations.
  • Diligently manage projects according to client‑approved scopes of work, delivering high‑quality reports on time and within budget.
  • Assist in managing and developing client relationships.
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting.
  • Comply with safety guidelines and site‑specific procedures (sample collection, laboratory documentation, monitoring systems, logbooks).
  • Work with cross‑functional teams to execute project work.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Environmental Policy, Engineering, Earth Science or related discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience and working knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
  • 5+ years of experience and working knowledge of ISO 14001 EMS guidance.
  • Must be able to pass a HAZWOPER physical and be medically able to wear a tight‑fitting respirator.
  • Experience evaluating and maintaining environmental regulatory compliance in industrial settings.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license.
  • Job assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and cleaning hazardous materials; participation in an OSHA‑mandated medical surveillance program will be required.
  • Ability to work in locations that feature rough terrain and limited accessibility.
  • Subject to client‑mandated drug/alcohol testing policy.
  • Travel up to 50% of the time, including short‑notice trips and overnight travel.
  • Self‑sufficient, self‑motivated and able to work under pressure of deadlines.
  • High attention to detail and investigative skills.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate to scientific and non‑scientific audiences.
  • Effective self‑leadership and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, and comply with company policies.
  • Moderate proficiency with office automation and communication software.
  • Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
  • Track record of upholding workplace safety and complying with WSP health, safety, drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Availability for schedules beyond the typical workweek.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree is preferred.
  • Professional environmental certifications (e.g., Certified Professional Environmental Auditor, Environmental Professional, Certified Hazardous Material Manager).
  • Experience conducting Phase I environmental site assessments following ASTM E 1527‑13.
  • Experience in environmental due diligence assessments of roadway and transportation corridors.
