Mechanical Engineer - Forensic Investigation

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mechanical Engineer with a PE license and experience in forensic investigation to join our dynamic team. This is a permanent position in the forensic engineering industry where you will play a critical role in incident investigation and analysis. The role requires a combination of technical expertise, analytical thinking, and strong communication abilities. You will conduct detailed forensic investigations—primarily vehicle accidents—applying engineering principles to help clients resolve losses and litigation matters.

The position may involve occasional day or overnight travel to accident sites and is well suited for motivated self‑starters who prefer independent work over desk‑bound routines and do not mind outdoor fieldwork.

Salary: $125,000 - $150,000 per year

Job Details

This position will require you to investigate mechanical failures, vehicular incidents, and fire‑related incidents in the construction industry. You will utilize your expertise in materials science to analyze and understand the causes of various incidents and failures, prepare detailed, accurate reports for legal proceedings and insurance claims, serve as an expert witness in court proceedings, collaborate with other professionals to develop preventative measures and safety protocols, provide guidance and mentorship to junior team members, and stay up‑to‑date with the latest advancements and best practices in forensic engineering and materials science.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive forensic investigations into mechanical failures, vehicular incidents, and fire-related incidents in the construction industry.
  • Utilize expertise in materials science to analyze and understand the causes of various incidents and failures.
  • Prepare detailed, accurate reports on findings for use in legal proceedings and insurance claims.
  • Serve as an expert witness in court proceedings, providing clear and concise explanations of complex technical issues to non‑technical audiences.
  • Collaborate with other professionals within the organization to develop preventative measures and safety protocols based on investigative findings.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior members of the forensic investigation team.
  • Stay up to date with the latest advancements and best practices in forensic engineering and materials science.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field is required; a Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a similar role, preferably in mechanical, structural forensic, or investigative engineering.
  • PE licensure.
  • Proven experience in incident investigation and analysis—specifically vehicle accident reconstruction, water loss cause of origin, workplace safety, and/or product liability is preferred.
  • Ideally brings in‑depth knowledge of materials science and its application in forensic investigation.
  • Previous experience serving as an expert witness in legal proceedings is highly desired.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non‑technical audiences.
  • Proficiency in using industry‑standard tools and software for forensic analysis and investigation.
  • Vehicle incident/accident reconstruction—ACTAR certification or equivalent is highly desirable.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with a keen eye for detail.
  • Excellent organizational and time‑management skills, with the ability to manage multiple investigations simultaneously.
