About The Role

UNLOCK YOUR BEST WORK LIFE

+ make a difference for every patient

We’re looking for an experienced and compassionate Pre‑Assessment Nurse to join our outpatient and pre‑assessment team on a part‑time basis. This is a vital role supporting patients through their pre‑operative journey, ensuring they are fully assessed, clinically optimised and well‑prepared for elective surgery.

You’ll work closely with anaesthetists, surgeons and the wider multidisciplinary team, playing a key role in promoting patient safety, reducing day‑of‑surgery cancellations and delivering an excellent patient experience. If you enjoy working autonomously, value patient‑centred care and want a role that fits around a healthy work‑life balance, this could be the perfect opportunity.

This is a part-time role working 22.5 hours a week; 3 shifts a week.

Typical shifts are 8:00 – 16:00 or 09:00 – 17:00.

What you'll be doing

As our Pre-Assessment Nurse, you will:

  • Undertaking comprehensive pre‑operative assessments for adult patients following surgical consent.
  • Taking detailed medical histories, completing clinical assessments and recording baseline observations.
  • Assessing patients’ fitness for surgery and anaesthesia, identifying and escalating any clinical risks.
  • Requesting, reviewing and actioning pre‑operative investigations in line with protocols.
  • Supporting patients with clear information about the surgical pathway, fasting, medications and recovery.
  • Providing reassurance and responding sensitively to patient concerns and anxiety.
  • Coordinating care with the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe and smooth surgical pathways.
  • Maintaining accurate clinical documentation and contributing to audit and service improvement activity.
What we’ll look for in you

As a NMC‑registered Adult Nurse with post‑registration experience in an acute, peri‑operative or outpatient setting, you will also have:

  • Strong knowledge of pre‑operative assessment and peri‑operative risk.
  • Ability to work autonomously, make safe clinical decisions and manage workload effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills with a calm, empathetic and patient‑focused approach.
  • Confident IT skills and experience using electronic patient records.
  • A flexible, positive attitude and commitment to delivering high‑quality care.
  • Desirable: experience in elective surgery, pre‑assessment, audit or service improvement.
Benefits and conditions
  • A full-time equivalent salary of £36,500 per annum
  • Work 22.5 hours per week
  • An extensive range of wellbeing and lifestyle benefits
  • 25 days annual leave (increasing with service) plus bank holidays
  • The support you need to grow in your role

Applicants must have the right to work in the UK.
