Primary SEND Teaching Assistant (Year 5/6)
Sherborne, Dorset
Key Responsibilities:We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Primary Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Teaching Assistant to join our vibrant team at a mainstream primary school in Sherborne, Dorset. You will be tasked with providing high-quality 1:1 support in a year 5/6 class setting, catering specifically to pupils with trauma and attachment needs. This full-time position requires an immediate start and involves the following responsibilities:
Working directly with pupils who have various SEND, focusing particularly on those with trauma and attachment difficulties.Establishing a supportive and nurturing environment conducive to the individual learning and emotional needs of the students.Collaborating with the classroom teacher to implement educational plans that cater to the needs of the students.Using a variety of strategies to facilitate communication and learning, ensuring that each child is able to progress to the best of their ability.Maintaining accurate records of pupils' progress, challenges, and achievements, and reporting these to relevant parties.Supporting the inclusion of SEND pupils within the classroom, promoting social interactions and engagement in activities.Managing challenging behaviour constructively and sensitively, applying appropriate de-escalation techniques and behaviour management strategies.Assisting with the development of resources and materials tailored to the needs of students with SEND.Participating in training and development opportunities to further your understanding of SEND, particularly trauma and attachment theories and practices.Requirements:
Prior experience working with children in a school setting, especially those with SEND.Understanding of trauma and attachment issues in young children and how they affect behaviour and learning.NVQ Level 2/3 or equivalent in Supporting Teaching and Learning or a related field is desirable but not essential.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with staff, pupils, and parents.Patience, empathy, and resilience with a genuine desire to make a positive impact on children's lives.A proactive attitude and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.A valid Enhanced DBS check, or willingness to obtain one.We look forward to receiving your application and thank you for your interest in joining our supportive and inclusive community.
