School of Social Work – Course SWRK 319:
Critical Thought & Ethics – Section 002, CRN 5752 – Fall 2026, Mondays 8:35-11:25, EDUC 539. This is a 11,824$ contract worth 3 credits and 39 hours of course.

Qualifications
  • MSW degree or equivalent.
  • Expert knowledge of ethics, social work theories, ethical theories, research, and legal frameworks in Canada and Québec and how they relate to social work practice.
  • At least 5 years of demonstrated social work practice experience.
  • Diplôme de maîtrise en travail social (MSW) ou l’équivalent.
  • Connaissance approfondie de l’éthique, des théories du travail social, des théories éthiques, de la recherche et des cadres juridiques au Canada et au Québec, ainsi que de leur lien avec la pratique du travail social.
  • Au moins 5 ans d’expérience démontrée en pratique du travail social.
Demonstrated practical application and/or teaching/research experience in the following areas
  • Use of codes of ethics, social work theories, ethical theories, research, and legal frameworks to articulate foundations of knowledge and practice in social work.
  • Critical engagement in ethical decision-making by drawing on various sources of information and applying them to ethical dilemmas and the situations within which they arise in the everyday context of social work practice.
  • Use of provincial, federal and international social work codes of ethics as applicable and in identifying ethical tensions.
  • Social work and ethical theories that support ethical decision-making.
  • Legal frameworks (relevant legislation that affects ethical decision-making).
  • Draw on research to inform critical decision-making and ethical decisions in social work practice.
  • The integration of results of empirical studies directly related to practice issues.
  • How the centrality of one’s own social location (age, race, class, gender, sexual orientation, ability, etc.) informs the decision-making process.
  • Critically evaluation of social work practice assumptions through reflexivity.
  • Communicate critical process through writing.
  • Utilisation des codes de déontologie, des théories du travail social, des théories éthiques, de la recherche et des cadres juridiques afin d’articuler les fondements des connaissances et de la pratique en travail social.
  • Engagement critique dans la prise de décisions éthiques en s’appuyant sur diverses sources d’information et en les appliquant aux dilemmes éthiques et aux situations dans lesquelles ils surviennent dans le contexte quotidien de la pratique du travail social.
  • Utilisation des codes de déontologie provinciaux, fédéraux et internationaux du travail social, selon le cas, et identification des tensions éthiques.
  • Théories du travail social et théories éthiques qui soutiennent la prise de décisions éthiques.
  • Cadres juridiques, y compris les lois pertinentes qui influencent la prise de décisions éthiques.
  • Capacité à s’appuyer sur la recherche pour éclairer la prise de décisions critique et les décisions éthiques en pratique du travail social.
  • Intégration des résultats d’études empiriques directement liés aux enjeux de pratique.
  • Compréhension de la façon dont le rôle central de sa propre position sociale (âge, race, classe sociale, genre, orientation sexuelle, capacité, etc.) influence le processus décisionnel.
  • Évaluation critique des présupposés de la pratique du travail social au moyen de la réflexivité.
  • Communication du processus critique par écrit.
