Position: Mental Health Registered Nurse (Outpatient)

Overview

The RN is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care. Coordinates care focused on patient education, self-management, and customer satisfaction throughout the continuum of care. Follows procedures per established policies and guidelines. Influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide competent, evidence-based care to assigned patients
  • Assist in directing nursing education, orientation, competencies, and quality improvement initiatives
  • Provide patient-centered and recovery-oriented care; maintain self-awareness while caring for patients with mental health conditions
  • Facilitate warm hand-offs, telehealth, and nurse-led psycho educational groups; use therapeutic communication and de-escalation techniques
  • Educate Veterans, families, and significant others about illness, medications, and treatment plans
  • Participate in care coordination with Inpatient MH Units and interdisciplinary teams; respond to emergencies as directed
  • Document nursing triage assessments, risk screens, clinical reminders, and plans of care according to facility policy
  • Maintain professional boundaries and a safe environment; support professional development of colleagues
  • Share knowledge to provide safe, quality nursing care; question clinical practices to ensure evidence-based care
Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • English language proficiency
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program; current, full, active, unrestricted RN license (U.S. state/territory)
  • If applicable, temporary GNT appointment allowed while pursuing licensure

Preferred Experience:

  • Familiarity with Suicide Prevention and Crisis Mental Health Care; experience with PTSD, Substance Use Disorders, and co-occurring disorders
  • Ability to work within an interdisciplinary team
  • Mental Health nursing experience preferred
