Transportation Security Officer – Transportation Security Administration (TSA)

Summary

Transportation Security Officers provide security and protection of travelers across all transportation sectors in a courteous and professional manner. Duties may also include securing high‑profile events and protecting important figures or any operation that impacts our transportation systems.

Salary Information

The salary range for Sheridan, WY is $45,649 to $56,282 (or $21.87 to $26.97 per hour) and includes locality pay of 17.06 %.

Sign‑On Bonus

Up to $5,000, paid in two installments during the first 12 months of service.

Duties
  • Operate various screening equipment and technology to identify dangerous objects in baggage, cargo and on passengers, and prevent those objects from being transported onto aircraft.
  • Perform searches and screening, which may include physical interaction with passengers (e.g., pat‑downs, search of property, etc.), conducting bag searches and lifting/carrying bags, bins, and property weighing up to 50 lb.
  • Control terminal entry and exit points.
  • Interact with the public, give directions and respond to inquiries.
  • Maintain focus and awareness while working in a stressful environment (noise from alarms, machinery and people, crowd distractions, time pressure, disruptive and angry passengers) to preserve the professional ability to identify and locate potentially life‑threatening devices.
  • Engage in continuous development of critical thinking skills necessary to mitigate actual and potential security threats, using risk‑based screening protocols that vary based on program requirements.
  • Retain and implement knowledge of all applicable Standard Operating Procedures, demonstrate responsible and dependable behavior, and adapt to new information or unexpected obstacles.

Conditions of Employment
  • U.S. Citizenship or U.S. National.
  • Minimum age 18.
  • Selective Service registration (for male applicants born after 12/31/59).
  • Pass a structured interview, drug screening, medical evaluation, and background investigation; subject to post‑employment random drug and/or alcohol testing.

Physical Demands
  • Maintain physical agility to squat and bend.
  • Lift and manipulate baggage and other objects weighing approximately 50 lb.
  • Walk up to 3 miles during a shift and stand for prolonged periods (up to 4 hours).
Qualifications

To qualify for the SV‑D pay band (GS‑5/6), meet one of the following:

  • Experience: At least one year full‑time experience in the security industry, aviation screening, or as an X‑ray technician.
  • Education: High‑school diploma, GED, HiSET, or TASC high‑school equivalency certificate.
Additional Requirements
  • Occasional travel:
    Minimum 3–6 weeks of travel in full‑time duty status for new‑hire training.
  • Selective Service registration verification is required for applicable applicants.
  • Credit check:
    No delinquent federal or state taxes or past‑due child support payments.
  • Residency:
    Reside within the U.S. for three of the last five years; exceptions for certain federal abroad experiences.
Work Schedules Full‑time Positions
  • 40 hours per week.
  • Shift work on any day from Sunday through Saturday; may include irregular hours, nights, holidays, overtime, extended and weekend shifts, changing shifts, and split shifts.
  • Split‑shift: two work shifts each lasting at least 2 hours with at least 2 hours between shifts within a 24‑hour period.
Part‑time Positions
  • 16–32 hours per week.
  • Shift work on any day from Sunday through Saturday; may include irregular hours, nights, holidays, overtime, extended and weekend shifts, changing shifts, and split shifts.
  • Split‑shift: two work shifts each lasting at least 2 hours with at least 2 hours between shifts within a 24‑hour period.
