Child Life Specialist - Pediatric Oncology - FWCC - Part Time

This position is a member of the multidisciplinary health care team, working directly with patients and families to reduce emotional distress, trauma, and to increase effective coping throughout the health care experience.

Responsibilities
  • Provides assessments, interventions and therapeutic techniques from infancy to adolescents.
  • Shares responsibility for department-wide direct services.
  • Acts as integral part of patient care team, advocating for patient and family needs with medical, nursing, communications/media and other staff.
  • Participates in activities for professional development and maintains required clinical knowledge, training and credentials.
  • Promotes Family Centered Care initiatives.
  • Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style.
  • Other related duties as required.
Qualifications

Education
- Required:

Bachelor's degree in Child Life or related field. Preferred:
Master's degree.

Work Experience
- Required:

1 year experience in Child Life, Child and Family Studies, Child Development or related field.

Certifications
- Required:

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Preferred:
Child Life Certification.

KSA

Skills and Abilities
  • Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of patient information. Must be proficient with Windows-style applications and keyboard.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Good time management skills.
Physical and Environmental Demands

Medium work – Occasional lifting of 20 to 50 pounds and frequent lifting of 10 to 25 pounds. The position requires walking or standing for a significant degree, and working at a production rate pace which may involve constant pushing and pulling of materials. Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work. The role requires stooping, bending, reaching, grabbing with arms and hands, manual dexterity, standing for prolonged periods, traveling throughout facilities and working a flexible schedule with on‑call availability.

Duties performed routinely require exposure to blood, body fluid and tissue.
