Overview
Registered Respiratory Therapist – Respiratory Therapy – St. Mary at Ochsner LSU Health.
This role provides respiratory care treatment, oxygen services, diagnostic testing and ventilation support to patients from neonatal to geriatric. The RT-CRT set-ups, monitors and weans oxygen therapy and artificial ventilation. The RT-CRT draws, analyzes and reports arterial blood gases and EKGs. The RT-CRT delivers intermittent therapy and assists with changing of artificial airways. Services are provided as ordered by a physician and in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Responsibilities- Performs routine and advanced therapeutic procedures according to established policy and procedure.
- Reviews and documents all clinical information regarding each patient.
- Educates patients and co-workers on procedures and treatment plans.
- Performs diagnostic procedures.
- Provides care based on physical, psycho/social, educational, safety and related criteria appropriate to the age of patient served in the assigned area.
- Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures, requesting permissions and communication style.
- Education:
Required – Associate s Degree;
Preferred – Bachelor s Degree. - Work Experience:
Required – None. - Certifications:
Required – Current license as a Respiratory Therapist in the state of practice;
Credentialed by the National Board of Respiratory Care as a Registered Respiratory Therapist;
Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association;
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) must be obtained within 90 days of hire. - Alternative Credentials:
Credentialed by the NBRC as a Certified Respiratory Therapist;
Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification for NICU roles where applicable.
Skills and Abilities
- Proficient with Windows-based applications and role-specific software; strong data entry and documentation skills; good verbal and written communication; strong interpersonal skills.
Very heavy work; must be able to travel between facilities; flexible work schedule including nights, weekends and on-call as required. Requires ability to perform duties in a patient care environment with exposure to blood and body fluids. May involve exposure to hazardous medications or waste depending on duties.
