This job manages trauma registry activities and facilitates continuous quality assessment and improvement in the delivery of trauma care by data collection, data management, data analysis, and reporting of trauma program results. Abstracts accurate data, compiles and verifies statistical reports, identifies issues of noncompliance, and reports any noncompliance issues.

Education
  • Required:

    Associate’s degree in medical records administration, health information systems, or related field.
  • Preferred:
    Bachelor’s degree in medical records administration, health information systems, or related field.
Work Experience
  • Preferred:
    Clinical experience and 3 years of coding experience.
Certifications
  • Required:

    Current Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or Certified Specialist in Trauma Registries (CSTR) to be obtained within 6 months of hire.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
  • Knowledge of American College of Surgeons (ACS) standards of compliance and ability to maintain the Level One Trauma Certification of the organization.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use the Injury Severity Index and the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS).
  • Analytical skills and the ability to interpret actions impacting patient.
  • Knowledge of coding processes and the relationship to how coding effects outcomes monitored.
  • Proficiency in using computers, software, and web-based applications.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to present information clearly and professionally.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
Job Duties
  • Reviews all emergency department trauma records and assigns scores using the Injury Severity Index.
  • Collects, interprets, summarizes, reports, and disseminates trauma data, ensuring accurate data abstraction through ongoing quality assurance and data validation processes.
  • Prepares data analyses used for presentations at the monthly Trauma Care Committee Meeting.
  • Identifies clinical outliers for inclusion in the monthly quality assurance/performance improvement process.
  • Maintains the Trauma Registry Policy and Procedure Manual.
  • Participates in focus studies and in the preparation of the Level One Trauma Survey by the American College of Surgeons as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Remains knowledgeable on current federal, state and local laws, accreditation standards or regulatory agency requirements that apply to the assigned area of responsibility and ensures compliance with all such laws, regulations and standards. Physical and Environmental Demands:
Light Work—Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently. The physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Normal routine involves no exposure to blood, body fluid or tissue and as part of their employment, incumbents are not called upon to perform or assist in emergency care or first aid.

The incumbent has no occupational risk for exposure to communicable diseases.
