At Severn Trent, our people are at the heart of everything we do. We’re in the top 5% of utility companies worldwide when it comes to employee engagement and ranked as a Top 50 UK Employer on Glassdoor. Join us in making a positive impact on the environment and our communities, while being valued and supported in a truly inclusive workplace.

Are you passionate about tackling climate change and making a positive impact on the environment? Our ambitious five‑year programme features over 5,000 innovative projects dedicated to overcoming the challenges of delivering exceptional water and waste services. With our dedicated in‑house design team, we are set to achieve outstanding results and make a significant impact.

The Senior Design Engineer takes the lead on all our Water Treatment technical solutions. You will undertake feasibility evaluation and technical assessments for projects and create designs for Water Treatment plants that will serve our 10 million customers across the Midlands, leaving a true legacy in the community. You will be required to create and evaluate engineering designs produced by our in‑house designers and through consultant design teams.

Working with experienced Principal Design Engineers and mentoring junior members of the team, this role is for those who want to grow their own skills and mentor others.

Key Responsibilities
  • Creation of designs (optioneering, outline design, detailed design) and specifications for subsequent delivery.
  • Assurance and control of third‑party designs to meet the requirements of our customers and regulators.
  • Coach and support the programme team so that the best solution is delivered (and commissioned) to the agreed, contracted design specification.
  • Develop and own design assessment and design completion milestones within the Project Team.
  • Proactively drive the project risk management and ensure risk registers are maintained throughout the entire design process.
  • Provide expert support to the wider design team by coaching and mentoring other engineers to ensure they can deliver to the highest future standards.
  • Promote a Health and Safety focus into the lifecycle of the design.
  • Use your engineering excellence to develop our standardised designs.
What You’ll Bring To

The Role

You will come equipped with design experience and a desire to create innovative and efficient solutions for the challenges facing Water Treatment. You will be confident engaging with stakeholders at all levels of the business to get the designs right, building relationships and influencing from frontline operations to senior leadership.

Hold a degree in civil engineering and be a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers or actively working towards incorporated or chartered status; we are keen to support you on that journey.

Be a forward‑thinking innovator capable of anticipating challenges and responding to change in a rapidly evolving environment. You need to be a team player, working with other engineering disciplines to develop the best solutions. We value character, positivity and a caring attitude in equal weight.
