Are you an Assistant Accountant who enjoys a mix of transactional accounts and month-end reporting in a friendly SME environment?
We’re working with an established, independent professional services business in the insurance sector based in Shrewsbury, who are looking to appoint an Assistant Accountant to take care of the day-to-day finance function. This is a hands‑on role where you’ll be involved in everything from bookkeeping and ledgers through to management accounts and reporting for the Directors.
The role can be offered on a full-time basis or part-time (around 2–3 days per week) for the right person, with some flexibility around exact hours.
The Role– What you’ll be doing Finance & Reporting
- Prepare monthly management accounts (P&L, balance sheet, cashflow).
- Maintain the general ledger and ensure all transactions are accurately recorded.
- Produce regular financial reports for the Directors, highlighting trends, risks and opportunities.
- Assist with budgeting and cashflow forecasting.
- Oversee sales and purchase ledgers – processing invoices, allocating payments and handling supplier queries.
- Complete bank reconciliations and reconcile key control accounts.
- Process staff expenses and credit card reconciliations.
- Monitor cashflow and flag any issues early.
- Prepare and submit VAT returns.
- Liaise with external accountants for year‑end accounts and corporation tax.
- Ensure financial processes and records meet HMRC requirements and support FCA compliance.
- Help maintain and improve financial controls, policies and procedures.
- Liaise with the external payroll provider to ensure accurate and timely payroll.
- Maintain records relating to pensions, benefits and other employee‑related costs.
- AAT qualified or QBE; ACCA/CIMA part‑qualified also considered.
- Experience as an Assistant Accountant, Accounts Assistant or similar in an SME or professional services environment.
- Strong bookkeeping and management accounts experience.
- Confident user of accounting software (Xero/Sage/Quick Books) and Excel.
- High attention to detail, accurate and well organised.
- Comfortable working autonomously and managing your own workload.
- Salary up to £35,000 per annum (FTE), depending on experience.
- Full‑time or part‑time hours (around 2–3 days per week for part time), with some flexibility.
