Compliance Officer; Private Sector Enforcement

Overview

Based in the West Midlands, Telford and Wrekin is a successful and growing Borough with a diverse housing market. Our private rented sector is growing alongside an aging population.

The Housing Enforcement Team ensures private rented properties in our Borough are safe, free from hazards and legally compliant. This role is part of the council’s Housing Enforcement Team.

Under the Housing Act 2004, the Local Authority has a duty to ensure that private sector housing meets minimum standards. You will be joining the team at an exciting time with the new Renters’ Rights Act bringing more protection for tenants.

The role plays a vital part in supporting vulnerable members of our community, ensuring they have access to safe and healthy housing in line with our newly adopted Housing Strategy.

• Investigating housing complaints and undertaking enforcement action
• Assessing and licensing HMOs
• Conducting inspections to identify disrepair and housing hazards
• Taking formal enforcement action to ensure compliance with housing legislation

We operate a flexible working system; our office day is Wednesday in Telford. The rest of the week you will be home based but must carry out inspections in Telford on other days.

• A solid understanding of housing legislation, guidance and the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS).
• Strong communication and organisational skills to manage a diverse and demanding caseload.

• Strong background in housing enforcement, service of notices, civil penalties and enforcement.
