Charity Overview
The Shrewsbury & Newport Canals Trust (SNCT) () is a long-established charitable trust dedicated to restoring the historic canal link between Shrewsbury, through Wappenshall, on to Newport and then terminating at Norbury Junction.
The SNCT aims to preserve the canal’s heritage while creating long-term benefits for local communities, tourism, education, wildlife, the environment and the regional economy. The Trust leads many restoration projects, manages sites such as Wappenshall, and works with volunteers, partners and funders to bring sections of the canal back into water.
Role DescriptionTo support this next phase of growth and engagement, SNCT is seeking volunteer applicants for a newly created role of Marketing Trustee, a position that will sit on the Trust Board and shape how the Trust presents itself to the public, supporters and stakeholders.
The Marketing Trustee role is responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining a marketing strategy that aligns with SNCT’s mission and restoration objectives. The role combines strategic oversight with hands‑on delivery, covering brand development, public relations, digital and social media, website management, publications, events and marketing‑led fundraising. Working closely with and support from fellow Trustees and volunteers, the Marketing Trustee will ensure that all external communications are consistent, effective and proportionate, while remaining easy to maintain and resilient to future succession.
The role also includes reporting to fellow Trustees, ensuring compliance with legal and governance requirements (including GDPR), and helping to build audiences and support across SNCT’s key sites and projects. With the café opening at Wappenshall, , this is a very exciting time to be involved.
The OpportunityThis role offers a highly rewarding opportunity for someone with marketing, communications or fundraising experience to apply their skills at board level in a meaningful, real-world setting. It provides direct involvement in strategic decision-making, leadership experience within a complex heritage and regeneration charity, and the chance to deliver visible, lasting impact. It is a pro-bono role, but appropriate expenses will be reimbursed.
This position will require physical attendance at certain meetings (both Trustee and others). Physical attendance will vary over time, but candidates should assume physical attendance will increase over time and not decrease. Therefore, it should not be considered as a “remote” appointment. This position will require some work to be done outside of the generic Trustee meeting cycle.
Time commitment in the longer term should be around 8-10 hours a month.
For those looking to strengthen their CV, serving as Marketing Trustee adds high premium experience such as governance experience, strategic thinking, stakeholder engagement and the ability to translate marketing expertise into social value—while contributing to the restoration of a nationally significant historic waterway.
