Our onboarding process starts with a friendly conversation. All our engineers are required to have their own insurance and to have their equipment calibrated at least once a year. In return, along with our engineer handbook, contract for services and branded clothing, we supply labels and technical support.

JR PAT Testing is an expanding PAT and Compliance Company currently looking for engineers to join our team in Sidmouth. We offer self‑employed positions with flexible hours, allowing interested individuals to work either part‑time or full‑time. Although we understand that some may travel further afield, we require that all applicants have a reasonable commuting distance of Sidmouth or closer. This role offers potential earnings on a pro‑rata basis depending on the rate per appliance, the number of tests and job dynamics.

Our jobs range from one‑day projects to long‑term contracts, allowing us to discuss all details and determine what works best for you.

To apply, you must have your own transport or means to get to work, equipment, hold a City & Guilds 2377 PAT qualification or equivalent, be reliable and honest, and have a ‘can‑do’ attitude. All necessary equipment, including testing instruments, measuring devices and additional tools, must be kept up‑to‑date, in good working order, and meet relevant regulations.

As a Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) engineer, no two days are the same. You’ll work in a variety of locations, from hospitals to retail outlets. A typical day starts with packing up all the necessary tools and equipment—testers, record books, van—before setting off to the first job. Once on site, you test appliances such as microwaves, kettles and computers, using test instruments to check safety and determine if they need to be replaced or repaired.

You inform users of the results and explain why certain appliances may be unfit for use. After finishing the tests, you record findings in a dedicated PAT test report book or an electronic system, and provide employers with a copy. You may be required to fill out additional paperwork such as completion certificates and checklists.

Throughout the day you’re constantly on the move from one location to another—alone or part of a team—so staying organised and ensuring accurate, efficient completion of all tests is essential. The role demands skill, experience and patience, but the rewards are significant.
