SUMMARY

The Evidence Technician works under the general supervision of the Office of Professional Standards and Training Sergeant. While performing duties related to evidence, they are responsible for completing routine clerical work including but not limited to entering data related to evidence collection, processing evidence for storage or shipment, and maintaining the evidence room inventory. This position is governed by state and federal laws, and department policies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Intakes, and maintains all evidence/property submitted by officers; checks for proper packaging and reports discrepancies; prepares evidence control forms, assigns control numbers, and enters locator information into the department evidence management system.
  • Stores evidence/property and prepares and maintains evidence records in the property room; signs evidence out to authorized persons for authorized reasons; releases to and receives evidence from the State Crime Laboratory; prepares disposition requests for the Chief of Police’s signature; returns evidence and found property as directed; and assists with property room inventories and disposition of property.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required or assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS

  • Basic knowledge of the criminal justice system.
  • Knowledge of general office practices.
  • Knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills.
  • Must pass a background investigation equivalent to that required for employment as a police officer.
  • Must be a United States citizen.
  • Possess a valid Driver’s License.
  • EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

    Have the formal educational equivalent of a high school diploma, plus twelve to eighteen months of training in business office practices, including inventory maintenance, or a related field.

    Other job-related education and/or experience may be substituted for all or part of these basic requirements upon approval of the Chief of Police.

    LANGUAGE SKILLS

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents in the English language. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public.

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

    Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

    REASONING ABILITY

    Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in a variety of forms: oral and written, to include graphic representations: diagrams, schedules, etc.

    CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, TRAINING

    Trained in Property and Evidence Management for Law Enforcement through the International Association for Property and Evidence, Inc, or the equivalent; or capable of gaining certification within one (1) year of hire.
