OverviewThis position is located at Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia. The Joint Pathology Center (JPC) supports the Military Health System and the nation by providing pathology consultations, education, and maintaining a large tissue repository, located in Silver Spring, Maryland.
The JPC is a leader in pathology and biomedical research, combining a historic legacy with advanced technologies to improve understanding and treatment of diseases affecting service members, veterans, and the wider population. Initiatives include a pilot program with the Veterans Health Administration to retain tissue samples beyond ten years, enriching the repository for research. The JPC is also digitizing over 1.6 million samples to facilitate access and research, including machine learning applications.

Responsibilities- Examine tissue samples (biopsies, surgical specimens, autopsies) of the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles to diagnose neurological diseases.
- Provide expert consultation to neurologists, neurosurgeons, and other healthcare professionals regarding diagnoses and treatment strategies.
- Conduct research on neurological diseases to develop new diagnostics and therapies.
- Consult with physicians on diagnoses and medical implications.
- Participate in case review and interpretation, including report preparation.

Basic Requirements- U.S. Citizenship
- Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
- Current, unrestricted medical license.
- Residency training approved by the VA, ACGME, or AOA, or equivalent experience.
- Board Certification in Neuropathology.
Degree from an accredited medical school (LCME or AOA accredited). Foreign graduates must verify ECFMG certification.
