Overview

FY26:
Counselor, Elementary – Jackson Road Elementary School, 1.0 FTE. This full‑time classroom counseling position supports students in academic achievement, career/educational decision making, and personal and social development. The counselor serves as a consultant to school staff, parents, and community members and is expected to attend meetings and activities outside the instructional day, in accordance with the MCEA agreement.

• Provide comprehensive guidance and counseling to students, assisting with academic achievement and personal development.
• Assist students with career/educational decisions, including development of Individualized Education Programs and 504 plans.
• Offer individualized or small‑group counseling services, including crisis interventions.
• Collaborate with private student therapists and non‑MCPS service providers when appropriate.
• Contribute to school prevention, behavior, and support focus groups and participation teams.
• Attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day.

• Master’s degree in school guidance and counseling from an accredited institution.
• Certificate or license that meets Maryland state certification requirements for school guidance and counseling.
• Thorough knowledge of MCPS policies, comprehensive guidance and counseling program, program of studies, and growth/development stages of children.
• Experience as a teacher and/or counselor preferred.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, including ability to speak effectively to large and small groups.
• Strong interpersonal and human relations skills, with ability to establish positive relationships with parents, staff, and students.
• Proficiency with computer and other technological equipment.

Full-time; day job (8:15 a.m. – 3:45 p.m.); 10 working months;
Silver Spring, Maryland; salary range $64,591 – $131,472 based on education and experience.
