Under the direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and collaborates with the general education teacher. The teacher monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities, and assists in developing Individualized Education Programs (IEP). Physical Demands:

Teacher is required to attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement. Teachers employed in special education schools or discrete special education service models must successfully complete specific courses provided by MCPS, focused on behavioral management and nonviolent crisis interventions, and will support behavioral interventions.

Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesKnowledge of the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) curriculum for the relevant grade/content range and the MCPS special education program. Thorough knowledge of IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, and assessments. Knowledge of elementary math instruction if seeking an elementary position. Understanding of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA 2015), Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA 2004), and state and federal policies related to special education.
Ability to provide instructional support, work well with students, teachers, and parents/guardians of students with disabilities, appropriately adapt instructional programs and materials, and demonstrate excellent communication skills. Knowledge of and the ability to apply the six performance standards of the Montgomery County Public Schools Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in special education. Proficiency in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment is required. Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or at least two years of teaching experience at a level appropriate to assignment (elementary or secondary) is required. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience that provide the necessary knowledge and skills may be considered.
Certificate/License:
Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education. Certification in a content area is desirable.
