The special education teacher works under the direction of the school principal and special education supervisor to provide direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities. The teacher collaborates with the general education teacher, monitors and evaluates outcomes for students, and assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP). Physical demands and special requirements include attending school meetings and activities outside instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement, completing required courses provided by MCPS, and supporting behavioral interventions for identified students.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of the Montgomery County Public Schools curriculum and special education program.
- Thorough knowledge of IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research‑based reading instruction, multicultural education, and assessments.
- Knowledge of methods of teaching elementary math (for elementary positions).
- Familiarity with the Every Student Succeeds Act, Individuals with Disabilities Act, and related policies.
- Ability to provide instructional support and to adapt instructional programs and materials.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to apply the six performance standards of the Montgomery County Public Schools Teacher Professional Growth System.
Education, Training, and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in special education.
- Fluency in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment.
- Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or at least two years teaching experience at a level appropriate to the assignment.
- Certificate/License:
Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education. - Content area certification is desirable.
