Summary Description Under direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. Monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities and assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP).

Required to attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement. Teachers employed in special education schools or discrete special education service models are required to successfully complete specific courses provided by MCPS, particularly in behavioral management and nonviolent crisis interventions.

• Knowledge of the Montgomery County Public Schools curriculum for the grade/content range of the position, MCPS special education program, and IEP.
• Knowledge of learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, and assessments.
• Ability to adapt instructional programs and materials appropriately.
• Excellent communication skills and collaboration with students, teachers, and parents/guardians.
• Knowledge and ability to apply the six performance standards of the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System.

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in special education.
• Fluency in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment.
• Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or at least two years teaching experience at the appropriate level (elementary or secondary).
• Certification:
  Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education. Certification in a content area is desirable.
