Under direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. They monitor and evaluate outcomes for students with disabilities and assist in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP). Physical demands: as required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.
Special requirements: required to attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement. Teachers employed in special education schools or discrete special education service models are required to successfully complete specific courses provided by MCPS, including courses in behavioral management and nonviolent crisis interventions. Teachers in these identified schools and programs will be required to support behavioral interventions.
Specific Information
SCB Teacher MCEA 10 Month:
Salary range $62,558 to $127,334 based on education & experience. For information about benefits, please follow this link:
- Bachelor’s degree in special education from an accredited college or university.
- Fluent in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment.
- Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years teaching experience at level appropriate to assignment (elementary or secondary).
- Certification:
Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I in special education; certification in a content area desirable. - Knowledge of MCPS curriculum for the grade/content range, MCPS special education program, IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research‑based reading instruction, multicultural education, assessments, ESSA 2015, IDEA 2004, state and federal policies and procedures related to special education.
- Ability to provide instructional support, work well with students with disabilities, teachers, and parents/guardians of students with disabilities; appropriately adapt instructional programs and materials.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Knowledge of and ability to apply the six performance standards established for MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System.
