Position: Senior Engineer (Transportation/Traffic)

Overview

Toole Design Group in Silver Spring, MD is looking to hire an experienced and talented full-time Senior Engineer (Traffic/Transportation). Are you skilled in conventional traffic engineering and focused on safety and efficiency for all modes? Are you interested in helping communities and clients think beyond conventional approaches to designing transportation networks and exploring innovative, context-sensitive alternatives? This Senior Engineer position focuses on multimodal traffic operations, traffic engineering design, and active transportation. A Day in the Life of a Senior Engineer (Transportation/Traffic)

You lead, support, and mentor an interdisciplinary team to deliver multimodal transportation projects in urban, suburban, and rural settings. You may help develop design plans for signing and pavement marking, traffic calming, maintenance of traffic, and traffic signals. You may develop safety improvements for Safe Routes to School studies, safety action plans, and other safety studies. You may use programs such as Synchro, Highway Capacity Software, Micro Station and/or AutoCAD to fulfill production work.

You will have the opportunity to use state-of-the-art tools to create safe and sustainable multimodal networks. You may work on road diet feasibility, multimodal studies for development, roundabout studies, trail/roadway intersection studies, parking studies, and design guidance. You will share knowledge with staff and clients, and mentor colleagues to ensure high-quality projects.

You may participate in business development pursuits in your home region and across North American offices. You will work with a close-knit team that cares about the work and communities served.

Salary

We are targeting a salary range of $120,000 to $140,000 for this position.

Qualifications of a Senior Engineer (Transportation/Traffic)
  • Bachelor s or master s degree in civil/transportation engineering
  • Professional engineering licensure
  • 10+ years of relevant experience developing traffic engineering design plans, analyses, and/or design documents (signing and pavement marking, maintenance of traffic, traffic signals)
  • 2+ years in a project or design management role
  • Experience developing conceptual designs for intersections and corridors
  • Proficiency in Micro Station Open Roads, Synchro, Highway Capacity Software, Micro Station InRoads, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, SIDRA, and/or VISSIM
  • Understanding of basic geometric design principles of roadways and industry standards
  • Understanding of MUTCD standards at the state and federal level
  • Experience developing construction documents and cost estimates
  • Interest in managing and mentoring staff

It would be a plus if you have any of the following:

  • PTOE licensure
  • Experience in Complete Streets, bikeway, and crossing design
  • Experience on projects in MDOT SHA, VDOT, DDOT, PennDOT
  • Exposure to AGi
    32 lighting design
  • Exposure to construction management
  • A strong interest in multimodal and active transportation design
  • Experience supervising and mentoring staff
