Senior Health Information Management Specialist
Employer: Children's National Hospital, Silver Spring, MD.
Job DescriptionThe Senior Health Information Management Specialist will perform quality improvement monitoring, coordinate and prioritize daily operations of the electronic health record section, and cross‑train in all core Health Information Management functions.
Key Responsibilities- Act as a resource for projects related to medical records systems and assist with barcoding of new and revised medical record forms.
- Retrieve patient identification and utilize the appropriate queues in the document imaging system to process work.
- Spend 2.5 hours daily reviewing patient records, correct errors, provide feedback to HIM specialists, HIM manager and director, and prepare quarterly statistics of quality findings.
- Prepare all documents for scanning, remove records that cannot be scanned, label batches with clinic information, and ensure documents meet visual quality standards.
- Scan documents at a rate of 35 inches per seven (7) hour shift, perform daily scanner maintenance, and avoid excessive carry‑over of work.
- Index electronic files, maintain an accuracy rate of 95%, and store and retrieve chart/documents in accordance with standard procedures.
- Process death certificates, participate in on‑call rotation for death certificates, and cover phone requests for records from outside providers for continuation of care purposes.
- High School Diploma or GED (Required).
- Minimum 3 years of Health Information Management experience with emphasis on computer systems and customer service (Required).
- Must be able to work in a fully computerized environment; basic understanding of Windows applications and Microsoft Office; strong verbal and written communication, organization, attention to detail, confidentiality, problem‑solving, and auditing skills.
- Computer keyboard proficiency; ability to sit for long periods, distinguish colors and grades of paper, sort documents alphabetically or sequentially, use judgment in determining involvement of physicians, nursing management, and unit support staff.
- Must be able to walk and push moderately heavy carts of records throughout the hospital facility.
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) (Preferred).
