DescriptionThe Director provides expertise, quality control, and strict regulatory compliance by tracking and sterilizing surgical instruments to reduce risk of infection, prevents loss of instruments, ensures trays are complete, and addresses concerns of surgeons regarding instrument availability at Holy Cross Hospital and Holy Cross Germantown Hospital. The Director oversees operations, conducts in‑service training, and works with perioperative leadership to implement efficiencies that deliver on‑time service, reduce costs, and ensure patient safety.
Represents Holy Cross Hospital and Trinity Health in all professional contacts.
- Proven leadership ability with excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Superior analytical skills in developing and applying financial and managerial models for material resource control.
- Proficiency in computer software such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Materials Management Applications, and knowledge of automated information and financial systems.
- Establish departmental policies and procedures and adapt them to meet operational objectives.
- Monitor departmental results against budget, operational and strategic plans and improve performance.
- Foster cross‑departmental cooperation with peers and senior management.
- Oversee 24‑hour operations, ensuring day‑to‑day function, policy communication, and quality, customer service, and financial performance.
- Develop, review, and recommend policy revisions that enhance resource utilization.
- Provide counseling, corrective action, and termination of employees as required.
- Maintain collaborative relationships with other departmental management and staff.
- Work closely with OR leadership to ensure scopes in endoscopy are processed per federal guidelines.
- Monitor staff adherence to vendor guidelines when processing instrumentation.
- Ensure sterile competency per AORN standard.
- Prepare departmental expenses and capital budgets.
- Integrate departmental operations into care delivery systems to promote efficiency and cooperation.
- Ensure department supports other departments and aligns with organizational initiatives.
- Report to the Vice President, Perioperative Services.
- Current licensure by the Maryland State Board of Nursing as a Registered Nurse or five years’ experience in a sterile processing environment.
- Proficient knowledge of sterile processing standards (AORN, AMII, JCAHO, OSHA).
- Minimum five years related clinical experience; minimum of three years management experience preferred.
- Current certification as Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) or obtained within one year of hire.
