Job Title: Patient Safety Attendant (Emergency Dept)

Employment Type: Full Time, Days

Shift: 12 Hour Night Shift

General Summary

Maintains safety and security of patients at all times by assisting nursing staff in monitoring patients on emergency petitions, including those with mental health diagnoses such as psychiatric conditions and suicidal ideation, as well as behavioral health issues. Assists in providing a safe environment for cognitively impaired, disoriented, manic, and/or patients who may self‑harm. Communicates and collaborates with care team members to support the provision of safe, high‑quality health care.

All duties are carried out under the direction, discretion, and supervision of the Registered Nurse. Other duties may be assigned as deemed necessary. Supports the Mission of Trinity Health and Holy Cross Health.

Minimum Licensure / Certification Required (if applicable)
  • Nursing assistant certification preferred
  • BLS/CPR certification required
Minimum Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Previous experience in an acute healthcare facility with mental health or psychiatric patients preferred.
  • Possesses a broad practical understanding of life experience and the ability to relate to individuals with behavioral or mental health disorders.
  • Ability to successfully complete required training and demonstrate associated knowledge and skills.
  • Computer and audiovisual skills using various applications and technologies:
    Internet, e‑mail, word processing, wireless phone, electronic medical record.
  • Ability to work in a high‑stress environment.
  • Effectively read, speak, write, compose and comprehend English.
  • Effective eye and hand coordination.
  • Effective problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to multi‑task, organize and prioritize.
  • Ability to work well and effectively communicate with individuals and teams.
Working Conditions

Must be able to independently perform essential job functions.

Physical Requirements
  • Lift patients/patient care equipment up to 35 pounds.
  • Push, pull, and move patients and patient care equipment.
  • Bend body downward at the waist and kneel.
  • Utilize a computer for periods of time throughout the shift.
  • Perform fine motor skills with upper extremities.
Visual Acuity

Requires close visual acuity for activities such as preparing and analyzing data, transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, extensive reading, visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, or operation of machines, using measurement devices, or assembling at close distances.

Auditory Acuity

Must be able to identify and distinguish auditory alarms in noisy environments.

Environmental Conditions

Subject to hazards associated with a hospital environment.

Pay Range

$17.00–$20.55 per hour. Pay is based on experience, skills and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. Pay may vary within the stated range based on location.
