Montgomery County Public Schools seeks a Security Assistant to support the local school in maintaining a safe and secure learning environment. The role works under the general supervision of the security team leader, assisting in visitor screening, student attendance verification, and various school security operations.
Responsibilities• Screen visitor access to school facilities.
• Assist in monitoring student class attendance.
• Provide support to the security team leader on difficult or unusual situations.
• Perform security patrol duties, including outdoor patrols in inclement weather.
• Intervene in fights and restrain individuals when necessary.
• Work flexible hours, including weekends and occasional overtime, as assigned.
• Wear designated security uniforms.
QualificationsJob Specific Information
Required to work flexible hours and weekends, as assigned by the principal to provide maximum security coverage. Preference for bilingual English/Spanish candidates with working knowledge of safety procedures and behavior management techniques.
Wage range: $24.45–$34.82 per hour, based on years of service.
Prefers candidates with investigative procedures knowledge, excellent written and oral communication skills, and a working knowledge of MCPS policies and procedures regarding attendance, suspension, and student behavior.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Knowledge of procedures and practices for ensuring the safety and welfare of others.
• Knowledge of behavior management techniques and security practices.
• Familiarity with investigative procedures (desirable).
• Ability to communicate effectively with students and staff.
• Ability to work harmoniously with staff and students under team leader supervision.
• Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
• Knowledge of and ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
Education / Training / ExperienceHigh School or GED diploma required; associate’s degree preferred.
College coursework in criminology, law enforcement, or related fields.
Experience in work involving the welfare and safety of students or others, preferably in an educational environment.
Experience in investigation desirable.
Experience in safety and security of persons and property, preferably as a police officer.
Certificate/license:
Possession of a valid Maryland Class C non‑commercial driver’s license, or equivalent.
First aid and CPR certification.
