Responsibilities
  • Interpret navigational charts to select a safe course for a trip.
  • Conduct fire, life raft, or man overboard drills to maintain small craft operating crew proficiency.
  • Follow established practices and maritime laws to provide continuously reliable and safe operation of small craft.
  • Report major repairs for corrective action on small craft.

  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • You will need to obtain and have a current valid United States driver's license.
  • You will have to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will need to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • Callback overtime is a requirement for this position.
  • Employee shall be required to become Facility Response Team (FRT) qualified.
  • You will be required to be certified in the use of ARPA equipment within 12 months of hire.
  • You must be able to complete Towing officers Assessment Record (TOAR) and attain a minimum inland Master of Towing Vessels endorsement within 12 months of hire.
  • You will be required to possess and maintain a minimum of U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) endorsed as Mate of Towing Vessels – Inland with Unlimited Radar Observer; or a minimum Merchant Mariner Credential endorsed as Mate of Self‑Propelled vessels of less than 500 Gross Register Tons (GRT) upon Inland waters with Unlimited Radar Observer.
