Description

The Adult Literacy Assistant helps oversee the planning and implementation of adult literacy programs for the Simi Valley Public Library. This role is responsible for partnership development and overall program development. The Adult Literacy Assistant works closely with the Adult Literacy Coordinators, ensuring effective delivery of literacy and outreach services.

Employment Type: Regular Part-Time, Non-Exempt (hourly)

Hourly Rate: $20.00

Hours Per Week: 20

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan, implement, and evaluate literacy and outreach programs and services to address diverse community needs.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with community organizations, schools, and other stakeholders to enhance literacy and outreach services throughout Simi Valley.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of instructional cohorts, ensuring services align with overall literacy goals.
  • Collaborate with library staff to provide training, assistance, and support for library volunteers, providing consistent and high-quality service to program learners.
  • Monitor and implement current trends and best practices in literacy education and mobile library services, fostering innovative approaches system-wide.
  • Assist with data collection and reporting processes for literacy and outreach programs.
  • Serve as a representative for the library's literacy and outreach services at community events and professional meetings.
  • Provide customer service by welcoming and intaking program participants, providing information regarding programs, events, conference rooms, etc.
  • Assist patrons with locating materials in the Literacy Lab, using computers, or explaining procedures (checking out, logging onto the Internet, making copies, etc.)
  • Check in and processes library materials as necessary
  • Address or escalate patron conduct or safety issues to appropriate management
  • Follow all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and custodianship of patron records.
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

An individual should possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed and meet the amount of education, training, and/or work experience required.

  • Bachelor's degree preferred; 1-2 years related work experience.
  • Experience with program development, implementation, and outreach is highly desirable.
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills; experience managing volunteers preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; bilingual English/Spanish communication skills preferred.
  • Knowledge of adult education principles, literacy instruction methodologies, and library systems and databases preferred
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with various stakeholders and library staff at different levels.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel within the city as needed.
  • Capable of lifting and carrying materials and equipment up to 25 lbs for outreach events and program activities.
  • Able to set up and break down equipment for presentations and events.
  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends for community events or program activities.
  • Proficiency in using various computer software, including Microsoft Office Suite, library management systems, and data analysis tools.
  • Ability to adapt to changing technologies and learn new systems as required.
  • Willingness to work in various environments, including indoor office settings and outdoor community spaces.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive information related to grants, budgets, and personnel matters.
  • Excellent customer service, with demonstrated cultural competence and ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Capacity to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines in a timely manner.
  • Regular and Reliable attendance is required.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to move from place to place within the location; lifting of items weighing up to (25) pounds and occasional up to 50 pounds such as files, books, stacks of paper, and other materials with a buddy system.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork.
