Status: Non‑Exempt, 10‑month position (Mid‑August to Mid‑June)
Supervisor: Director of Health Services
Under the direction of the Director of Health Services, the Registered Nurse (RN) works Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., collaboratively with a team of health professionals, faculty, students, and parents/guardians. The RN provides primary and episodic health care for boarding and day students, supporting health maintenance, education, and the prevention and management of acute and chronic illnesses.
This role focuses on assessing and addressing the physical and social health needs of adolescents to help students achieve optimal health and wellness in a residential academic setting.
Key Duties and Responsibilities- Review each student’s Vital Health Record and Annual Physical Exam in Magnus before providing care; verify allergies, medications, and care plans.
- Provide primary, acute, and chronic nursing care according to standing orders, facility protocols, and professional nursing standards.
- Triage, evaluate, and treat illnesses or injuries, referring to medical providers as needed.
- Develop and maintain individualized health care plans for students with chronic or acute conditions (e.g., asthma, allergies, diabetes, ADHD).
- Administer prescribed and over‑the‑counter medications per standing orders, maintaining up‑to‑date pharmacological knowledge.
- Conduct daily medication counts, coordinate refills, monitor effectiveness, and ensure secure storage of all medications, including controlled substances.
- Perform and document point‑of‑care testing (e.g., blood glucose, rapid strep, urinalysis, COVID, flu).
- Document all care, medication administration, and communications accurately in the Magnus electronic health record system.
- Perform other duties as assigned or institutionally necessary to support the health and wellness of the school community.
- Monitor and update student health records in Magnus; contact families to obtain missing or updated medical documents.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of all student health information.
- Ensure compliance with state mandates on immunizations and physical examinations.
- Identify and respond to health emergencies, call 911 as needed, and coordinate with the Administrator on Duty for communication with staff and families.
- Coordinate care with off‑campus healthcare providers, including scheduling and follow‑up appointments.
- Arrange transportation for off‑campus medical appointments and drive students when necessary.
- Support management of international health insurance plans.
- Coordinate the annual influenza clinic and catch‑up vaccinations with local health providers or pharmacies.
- Provide health education and counseling for students through the Women’s Health Class and support parents and staff as needed.
- Report suspected abuse or neglect as a mandated reporter in consultation with the Director of Health Services.
- Notify the Dean of Students of student absences or tardiness due to Health Center visits.
- Provide front desk coverage and answer Health Center calls when not actively providing care; document all relevant phone or email communications.
- Maintain and document the monthly health office inventory.
- Pursue continuing education and professional development to stay current with best nursing practices and share knowledge with the Director.
- Perform other duties as assigned or institutionally necessary to support the health and wellness of the school community.
- Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Connecticut (required)
- BLS certification (required)
- Minimum of 5 years of pediatric nursing experience, preferably in a school, urgent care, or emergency room setting
- Proficient in Magnus Health, Blackbaud, Orah, and Google Workspace products
- Demonstrates a positive attitude, cultural awareness, and respect for students’ individuality
