Position: Perm - Supervisor - Sterile Processing (Days) Sioux City, IA

Overview

Sterile Processing Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Sterile Processing Department. This role provides leadership, guidance, and hands-on support to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient reprocessing of surgical instruments and medical equipment. The supervisor works alongside staff, coaches team members on regulations and best practices, and supports patient care across all nursing and surgical areas.

  • Shift: Days
  • Hours: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
  • Schedule: Monday–Friday
  • Hours per Day: 8
  • Weekend Requirement: None
  • On-Call Requirement: None
  • Hourly Rate: $24.50 – $36.76

Key Responsibilities
  • Leadership & Staff Management:
    • Ensures proper orientation and onboarding for all new staff.
    • Participates in interviewing and hiring processes as needed.
    • Completes employee performance evaluations.
    • Administers corrective actions in alignment with the organization’s just culture framework.
    • Develops and maintains an effective departmental schedule to support smooth workflows.
    • Conducts departmental rounds and provides guidance and support to staff as needed.
    • Encourages continuing education and professional certification.
    • Promotes a culture of continuous improvement, competency, and accountability.
    • Collaborates with surgical leadership to identify employee engagement opportunities and support action planning.
    • Supports a positive work environment through mentoring and team development initiatives.
  • Clinical Oversight & Patient Safety:
    • Works collaboratively with surgical leadership to ensure safe, high-quality sterile processing services.
    • Mentors staff in understanding and applying regulations, standards, and best practices.
    • Ensures manufacturer instructions for cleaning and reprocessing instruments are accessible and followed.
    • Communicates process updates and operational changes to appropriate personnel.
    • Ensures staff have appropriate tools and resources to deliver outstanding clinical service.
    • Identifies operational issues and communicates them promptly to leadership.
    • Assists in maintaining compliance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Sterile Processing Quality & Compliance:
    • Maintains current knowledge of standards, guidelines, and recommendations related to cleaning, decontamination, disinfection, and sterilization.
    • Coordinates processes that align with regulatory and professional standards.
    • Utilizes resources from regulatory and accrediting bodies (e.g., AAMI, CDC, DNV, OSHA).
    • Contributes to infection control and safety-related policy development and revisions.
    • Implements performance improvement activities and tracks departmental outcomes.
    • Serves as a subject matter resource for sterilization and disinfection processes.
    • Oversees monitoring, documentation, and record retention for physical, chemical, and biological indicators.
    • Identifies and documents variances or infractions and leads corrective actions.
    • Supports continuous quality improvement initiatives and cost-control efforts.
    • Monitors inventory levels to ensure adequate supply while preventing waste.
    • Participates in budget planning and monitoring for departmental operations.
  • Hands-On Technical Duties:
    • Cleans, decontaminates, assembles, packages, disinfects, and sterilizes reusable equipment and supplies.
    • Inspects, assembles, and prepares instrument sets according to established procedures.
    • Prepares, loads, and monitors sterilization equipment, including Sterad systems.
    • Uses testing monitors to ensure sterility and equipment performance.
    • Performs all duties of a Sterile Processing Technician as required.
  • Professional Growth & Development:

    • Participates in quality improvement projects and evidence-based practice initiatives.
    • Completes mandatory education and attends required meetings.
    • Adheres to safety goals, infection prevention standards, and risk management policies.
    • Completes annual mandatory training.
  • Communication &

    Collaboration:

    • Communicates effectively using established communication standards.
    • Maintains clear, concise verbal communication and accurate written documentation.
    • Collaborates effectively with physicians, nursing staff, ancillary departments, and leadership.
    • Demonstrates flexibility and teamwork in meeting departmental needs.
    • Ensures compliance with HIPAA and all regulatory requirements.
Qualifications
  • Associate Degree required
  • Minimum of two (2) years of Sterile Processing experience required
  • Sterile Processing certification required at hire or within six (6) months
  • Current BCLS certification required at hire or ability to obtain within 90 days
  • Ability to complete computer-based programs
  • Ability to meet unit competency requirements and successfully complete orientation
  • Reliable attendance required
  • Ability to perform essential job functions, including effective communication
  • Ability to distinguish colors
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English
