Job Summary

The Bus Driver provides safe and efficient transportation for students to enjoy the fullest possible advantage of the District's curriculum and extra‑curricular programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform route functions necessary to transport students and authorized personnel safely to and from school or other designated locations in accordance with the route sheet and trip ticket instructions.
  • Operate and properly secure equipment required to support transportation of students with disabilities or special needs.
  • Observe legal and defensive driving practices; assure compliance with applicable traffic and student transportation laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Maintain safety precautions when passengers are boarding and departing the bus.
  • Transport only authorized students and sponsors; report trespassing violations to the supervisor.
  • Discharge students only at authorized stops.
  • Determine appropriate action in emergency situations according to established guidelines; administer first aid to passengers as needed.
  • Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of student information.
  • Utilize two‑way radios for the bus‑to‑bus and bus‑to‑base communications; report all accidents, injuries, and delays to the supervisor promptly and complete required reports.
  • Promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude, conversation, and by the safe and professional operation of a school bus.
  • Enforce regulations against eating, drinking (except bottled water), use of tobacco, profane language, and use of headphones or cell phones on the bus.
  • Transport students to and from school‑sponsored events and/or approved field trips as needed.
  • Exercise responsible leadership when on school district activity trips; meet scheduled departure times and prepare related logs and reports.
  • Operate, care for, and clean areas and equipment used in the transportation of students; use proper technique for cleaning and disposing of human fluids; help keep the assigned bus clean; sweep and empty trash daily.
  • Conduct required daily safety inspections of buses; inspect the interior, exterior, and engine of buses to assure safe operational condition; report mechanical malfunctions or other problems as required; prepare and maintain related records.
  • Attend bus driver meetings and in‑service training to improve skills, attitudes, and knowledge of school bus driving and student management.
  • Be readily available in the event of emergency dismissal.
  • Maintain a regular and dependable level of attendance, an essential function for this position.
Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

Minimum education includes a high school diploma/GED and previous experience working with children. Any other alternatives to the qualifications as the Board may deem appropriate or acceptable.

Communication Skills

Must have the ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Must be able to write routine reports and speak clearly and effectively over a radio communications system, to groups of students and sponsors, and before groups of customers or employees of the organization. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions, inquiries, and/or complaints.

Displays courtesy, tact, and respect when dealing with others.

Analytical and Reasoning Skills

Maintain appropriate confidentiality. Ability to react well under pressure, handle and balance multiple demands at one time, work with frequent interruptions, and perform duties and tasks at expected levels of professionalism. Ability to use independent judgment and demonstrate initiative to act without being asked.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Ability to operate wheelchair lifts, ramps, and securement locks. Continual sitting, reaching, and repetitive hand and arm motions. Must talk, hear, stand, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and reach with hands and arms. Frequent walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling,…
