Theater Head Carpenter – Washington Pavilion Management Inc. (WPMI) | Sioux Falls, SD – Full‑Time (Evenings, Weekends & Holidays Required)
Position SummaryThe Head Carpenter plays a vital role in the management, maintenance, and enhancement of technical equipment, rigging systems, and backstage operations. The role involves direct supervision of in‑house and part‑time technical staff, coordination with touring and local productions, and support for facility upgrades and safety compliance.
Key Responsibilities- Lead backstage and technical operations across all performance venues.
- Serve as the onsite technical contact for local and touring productions.
- Schedule and supervise technical crews for events and productions.
- Oversee maintenance, repairs, and inventory of stage and theater equipment.
- Determine technical priorities and support event execution from pre‑production through load‑out.
- Plan and participate in equipment purchases and facility upgrade initiatives.
- Ensure safe use of all technical equipment and provide training as needed.
- Support front‑of‑house and non‑performance event technical needs.
- Serve as rigging systems liaison, including installations and staff training.
- Act as call steward for crew call management for productions.
- Promote a safe and collaborative working environment.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in Technical Theater, Stagecraft, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Minimum of 4 years of supervisory experience in a theatrical or performance venue setting.
- Strong understanding of stagehand contracts, safety protocols, and live production logistics.
- Hands‑on experience with rigging, fly rail operations, and technical system integration.
- Working knowledge of lighting, sound, and scenic systems.
- Proficient in Vector Works (or similar CAD software) and Microsoft Office.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to work at heights, lift up to 60 lbs, and stand for extended periods.
- Flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, holidays, and on‑call availability.
This role requires work in both indoor and outdoor venues, often in environments with noise, stage lighting, and mechanical systems. Physical demands include climbing, lifting, and manual handling of equipment during event setups and breakdowns.
