A Sheet Metal Foreman is responsible for overseeing the installation, assembly, and repair of sheet metal products and equipment, such as ducts, control boxes, drainpipes, and furnace casings. They also play a key role in project planning, scheduling, and execution.
Primary Responsibilities- Supervising and coordinating the activities of the sheet metal team in the shop or on the job site.
- Reading and interpreting blueprints, sketches, or product specifications to determine the sequence and methods of fabricating, assembling, and installing sheet metal products.
- Allocating resources for assigned projects.
- Inspecting work to ensure it conforms to specifications and work schedules.
- Ensuring all safety protocols and procedures are followed to maintain a safe working environment.
- Training and guiding team members in sheet metal installation, maintenance, and repair tasks.
- Communicating with clients, contractors, and project managers to provide updates and discuss potential issues.
- Ensuring the job is completed within the estimated time and material costs for project tasks.
- Ordering materials and supplies needed for the job.
- Maintaining tools and equipment used in sheet metal operations.
- Interpreting blueprints, sketches, or building plans to map out the specifications of a project.
- Planning the sequence of tasks for the crew, assigning those tasks, and ensuring all tools and materials are available.
- Checking work progress and the quality of finished products to ensure they meet required standards.
- Troubleshooting and resolving issues or delays.
- Handling administrative tasks such as maintaining employee records, preparing reports, and ensuring safety regulations are followed.
- Training new workers in tasks, safety protocols, and company procedures.
- Ensuring smooth operations and maintaining high-quality standards in the sheet metal industry.
- Advanced knowledge and understanding of sheet metal fabrication techniques and processes.
- Strong leadership and communication skills to guide, instruct, and motivate a team of skilled professionals.
- Exceptional attention to detail to ensure precision in measurements and fabrication.
- Practical skills for handling, cutting, bending, and molding sheet metal.
- Ability to read, understand, and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
- Problem‑solving skills to effectively troubleshoot issues that may arise during the fabrication process.
- Physical stamina and strength to handle heavy tools, machinery, and sheet metal for prolonged periods.
- Understanding and adherence to safety regulations and procedures to maintain a safe and productive work environment.
- Time‑management skills to complete projects within specified deadlines.
- Customer‑service skills to understand client requirements and deliver results that meet or exceed expectations.
- Ideally at least 5 years of experience in sheet metal installation or maintenance roles.
- Experience with over 3 years enabling handling of complex projects such as ductwork fabrication, roof flashing, and metal siding.
- Capability to read and interpret blueprints and follow specific job orders.
- Over 7 years’ experience may involve leadership or supervisory roles.
- Experience in project management, team leadership, and overseeing other sheet metal workers.
- Completed apprenticeship program or vocational training in sheet metal work, welding, or related field preferred.
A Sheet Metal Foreman manages the day‑to‑day operations of a sheet metal fabrication shop or construction site, ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. Responsibilities include managing a team, scheduling, coordinating work, communicating with clients and stakeholders, and maintaining strong industry knowledge and leadership skills.
