The Operating Room (OR) has a total of 35 operating suites, with three suites in the Sanford Heart Hospital, one of which is a hybrid suite. All ORs have state-of-the-art equipment. Outpatient and inpatient procedures total approximately 24,000 annually. Nurse-to-patient ratio is one-to-one. Nurses are usually assigned to a specific OR at the start of their shift and complete cases scheduled in that OR.
The OR performs elective and scheduled surgeries, along with urgent and emergent surgeries.
We have ten specialized surgery teams including orthopedic inpatient; orthopedic outpatient; cardiovascular; urology; OB/GYN; ENT; ophthalmology; general and robotic; pediatrics; and neurosurgery and plastic surgery. The skills of these teams provide quality care while offering opportunities to develop and utilize abilities.
Nurses in the OR start as a circulator nurse, maintaining a sterile field/environment, verifying surgical consent, verifying correct supplies and instruments, assisting the CRNA & Anesthesiologist in induction and emergence, positioning the patient safely, and understanding surgical procedures and steps to anticipate supplies and equipment. If desired, after gaining experience as an OR circulator nurse, there is an option to learn the scrub nurse role.
On-the-job training to become a scrub nurse will be provided. Scrub nurses must learn instrument names, sets, functions, and how to pass instruments safely and efficiently.
