Overview

Primary Purpose of Job

Jail Officer I:
The primary purpose of this position is to manage the safety and security of inmates at the CBS Community Jail ("Jail") consistent with the State of Alaska Standards for Jail Operation. Under the daily direction of the Jail Officer II and the direct supervision of the assigned Lieutenant, the employee works independently on assigned duties and responsibilities.

Jail Officer II:
The primary purpose of this position is to direct the work of the Jail Officer I positions, oversee inmate activities, ensure the safety of inmates, and maintain the security of the Jail. Under the direct supervision of the assigned Lieutenant, the employee works independently on assigned duties and responsibilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Jail Officer I:
    Supervises inmates in the Jail and ensures facility security within the Police Station
  • Jail Officer I:
    Completes booking and release procedures such as fingerprinting, photographing, and documentation consistent with Alaska Correction Offender Management System (ACOMS)
  • Jail Officer I:
    Conducts hourly checks by inspecting cells
  • Jail Officer I:
    Documents inmate activities
  • Jail Officer I:
    Provides meals, arranges medical care, and transports inmates to court or hospital
  • Jail Officer I:
    Promotes inmate safety and security and identify and manage inmate behavior and health issues
  • Jail Officer I:
    Supervises activities of visitors, maintenance personnel, and contractors who come to the jail
  • Jail Officer I:
    Performs limited dispatch and police duties (traffic control) as needed
  • Jail Officer I:
    Coordinates with other agencies, such as Department of Public Safety, AST Judicial Services, and Department of Corrections for remand and release of inmates
  • Jail Officer I:
    Cleans the Jail, handles laundry, both facility and inmate, ensures sanitary conditions daily or as needed
  • Jail Officer I:
    Performs other duties as assigned
  • Jail Officer II:
    Performs all duties of a Jail Officer I
  • Jail Officer II:
    Ensures compliance with state Standards of Jail Operations and ACOMS by all Jail Officers or other SPD positions working in the Jail
  • Jail Officer II:
    Directs the work, trains, schedules shifts, and provides input for the evaluations of Jail Officers I positions
  • Jail Officer II:
    Advises the Lieutenant of actual and potential emergency and security problems with facility, inmates, staff, or other operations
  • Jail Officer II:
    Prepares, updates, and evaluates Jail policies and procedures for efficiency and training and makes recommendations to Lieutenant
  • Jail Officer II:
    Prepares a monthly Jail report and certification as required by Department of Corrections
  • Jail Officer II:
    Performs dispatch duties as needed
  • Jail Officer II:
    Performs Property and Evidence Custodian duties as needed
  • Jail Officer II:
    Performs other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of jail policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of current practices and procedures for operating a Jail safely
  • Knowledge of guidelines for inmate and facility security
  • Skill in operating a personal computer and Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and any specialized software for public safety operation
  • Skill in performing computer entry duties with speed, efficiency, and accuracy
  • Skill in reading, writing, and mathematics at a high school level
  • Skill in multitasking efficiently and effectively
  • Skill in organizing, prioritizing, and evaluating the work of others
Minimum Qualifications
  • Jail Officer I: HS Diploma or GED
  • Jail Officer I:
    Some work experience dealing with people in a customer service context, with counseling groups, or related area, preferred
  • Jail Officer I:
    Experience in general security or law enforcement, preferred
  • Jail Officer I:
    Possession of, or ability to obtain within 90 days of initial hire, First Aid and CPR certification
  • Jail Officer I:
    Possession of, or ability to obtain within 12 months of initial hire, Alaska Department of Corrections Municipal Correctional Officer Academy certification
  • Jail Officer I:
    Or any equivalent combination of experience, education, and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work
