Jail Officer I:
The primary purpose of this position is to manage the safety and security of inmates at the CBS Community Jail consistent with the State of Alaska Standards for Jail Operation. Under the daily direction of the Jail Officer II and the direct supervision of the assigned Lieutenant, the employee works independently on assigned duties and responsibilities.
Jail Officer II:
The primary purpose of this position is to direct the work of the Jail Officer I positions, oversee inmate activities, ensure the safety of inmates, and maintain the security of the Jail. Under the direct supervision of the assigned Lieutenant, the employee works independently on assigned duties and responsibilities.
- Supervises inmates in the Jail and ensures facility security within the Police Station.
- Completes booking and release procedures such as fingerprinting, photographing, and documentation consistent with Alaska Correction Offender Management System (ACOMS).
- Conducts hourly checks by inspecting cells.
- Documents inmate activities.
- Provides meals, arranges medical care, and transports inmates to court or hospital.
- Promotes inmate safety and security and identifies and manages inmate behavior and health issues.
- Supervises activities of visitors, maintenance personnel, and contractors who come to the jail.
- Performs limited dispatch and police duties (traffic control) as needed.
- Coordinates with other agencies, such as Department of Public Safety, AST Judicial Services, and Department of Corrections for remand and release of inmates.
- Cleans the Jail, handles laundry (both facility and inmate), ensures sanitary conditions daily or as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Performs all duties of a Jail Officer I.
- Ensures compliance with state Standards of Jail Operations and ACOMS by all Jail Officers or other SPD positions working in the Jail.
- Directs the work, trains, schedules shifts, and provides input for the evaluations of Jail Officers I positions.
- Advises the Lieutenant of actual and potential emergency and security problems with facility, inmates, staff, or other operations.
- Prepares, updates, and evaluates Jail policies and procedures for efficiency and training and makes recommendations to Lieutenant.
- Prepares a monthly Jail report and certification as required by Department of Corrections.
- Performs dispatch duties as needed.
- Performs Property and Evidence Custodian duties as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- HS Diploma or GED.
- Some work experience dealing with people in a customer service, counseling groups, or related area, preferred.
- Experience in general security or law enforcement, preferred.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within 90 days of initial hire, First Aid and CPR certification.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within 12 months of initial hire, Alaska Department of Corrections Municipal Correctional Officer Academy certification, or any equivalent combination of experience, education, and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
- All of the Jail Officer I minimum qualifications.
- Three years of experience as a Jail Officer I.
- Possession of, or the ability to obtain within 180 days of initial hire, Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN) certification, or any equivalent combination of experience, education, and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

- Possession of, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire, a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Alaska.
