Responsibilities
  • Promotes the SEARHC Seven Standards of Excellence; implements safe, therapeutic, and efficient care for patients with multisystem diseases and/or treatment complications; prioritizes care based on acuity and patient preference; anticipates problems; adapts to changes; initiates, manages, and documents nursing procedures in line with scientific principles and policy; demonstrates knowledge of equipment; administers age-specific medications; coordinates patient care with physicians and other healthcare team members;

    initiates actions to reduce risks; facilitates healing and provides individualized, goal-oriented nursing care; seeks resources when beyond scope; explains tests and procedures to patients/families; teaches and demonstrates skills to promote understanding and coping with illness; maintains patient confidentiality.

  • Plans, coordinates, and completes patient care on the C-section post-surgical and obstetrics unit. Provides total patient care from post-surgical recovery to discharge, including teaching and self-care demonstrations. Delivers focused 1:1 care during labor; conducts nursing/medical interventions, vaginal exams, comfort measures, labor coaching; monitors fetal heart rate tracing and performs NSTs; cares for high-risk maternal or neonatal patients; supports breastfeeding and breastfeeding consultations;

    triages OB calls; assists with bedside procedures; performs well baby checks; supervises and delegates to CNA and housekeeping staff; maintains current standards in fetal heart monitoring and complies with ACOG standards of care.

  • Performs nursing assessments through interviewing and observation; documents and interprets age-related data; completes initial patient assessments; identifies problems and nursing diagnoses; recognizes psychosocial risks; utilizes resources to assess complex or unfamiliar conditions.

  • Imparts educational knowledge to develop skills and promote understanding; evaluates teaching effectiveness; participates in patient care conferences; develops educational programs and materials; documents education; provides discharge information; participates in in-services; ACLS trained within six months of employment and biannually thereafter; completes mandatory training and competency checks; uses opportunities for incidental teaching with staff.

  • Communicates in a supportive, constructive manner; assists in orientation of new staff; guides others in nursing interventions; follows policies and standards; supports the Nursing services mission; may act as Contact RN and lead assigned RNs, LPNs, and CNAs.

  • Develops and contributes to a plan of nursing action; transcribes physician orders accurately; uses resources to formulate written care plans; documents reassessments and progress; writes progress notes and provides shift reports per area guidelines.

  • Performs other duties as assigned; participates in departmental meetings and goal setting; adheres to scheduling guidelines; completes annual competencies and maintains licensure and certifications; follows dress code; escalates unresolved issues to Nurse/Administrative Manager as needed.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • May lead CNAs.

Education, Certifications, and Licenses Required
  • Current, full, unrestricted Registered Nursing license in Alaska or another U.S. state.

  • Direct Hire must have applied for Alaska nursing license before start date.

  • BLS required; ACLS, PALS, and NRP required within six months of hire (or obtained on hire).

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Clinical Competency required within 3 months of hire and every 3 years;
