Retail & Store Manager, Butcher
HAMES CORPORATION, a fourth-generation family-owned and operated company, has been serving the Sitka/Ketchikan, Alaska community since 1949. We are more than a grocer—we are a gathering place for coffee, doughnuts, and community events.
We are looking for a Meat Manager who will lead our meat department with expertise and precision. The role involves supervising staff, ensuring exceptional customer service, managing inventory, and upholding high standards of food safety. You will drive sales and profitability through effective merchandising, product quality, and cost control.
Responsibilities- Supervise and train a team of meat cutters and department staff, ensuring top‑notch performance and adherence to company standards.
- Provide exceptional customer service, assisting customers with meat selections, custom cuts, and product recommendations while maintaining a positive, customer‑first attitude.
- Oversee inventory control, ensuring proper stock levels, quality standards, and efficient product rotation; minimize waste through effective product management and planning.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, including sanitation standards and safe food handling practices.
- Lead the merchandising of meat products, ensuring attractive displays and adherence to pricing, labeling, and promotional strategies to drive sales.
- Manage department costs, including labor, inventory, and waste, to achieve financial goals while maintaining product quality and customer satisfaction.
- Collaborate closely with the Deli and Bakery Managers to coordinate operations, promotions, and ensure an integrated, smooth‑running department.
- Physical stamina: stand for extended periods, lift up to 50 pounds, and perform physically demanding tasks such as cutting, lifting, and stocking meat products.
- Manual dexterity: skilled in the use of knives, saws, and other meat‑cutting tools with precision and safety.
- Attention to detail: maintain quality and consistency in product cuts, presentation, and customer orders.
- Safety awareness: adhere to safety protocols, proper lifting techniques, and safe operation of equipment.
- Work environment: work in a cold environment (refrigerated sections) and manage exposure to high‑traffic areas, noise, and fluctuating temperatures.
- Multitasking: handle multiple responsibilities and shift priorities in a busy, fast‑paced work environment.
- Communication skills: strong verbal communication for interacting with customers, team members, and management.
- Flexibility: willingness to work varying shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
The work environment is primarily within a meat cutting department, which may include exposure to refrigerated storage areas, walk‑in freezers, and meat processing equipment. The role involves frequent exposure to cold environments when working with fresh meats and frozen products, and occasional exposure to high temperatures when using meat processing tools. The atmosphere may contain strong odors related to meat products, occasional airborne particles, and noise from machinery and customer traffic.
Safety-sensitivePosition
Job responsibilities require handling un‑packaged foods and potentially hazardous food or food‑contact surfaces. A valid food worker card and a Serv Safe Manager Certification issued by the State of Alaska's Division of Environmental Health (DEC) must be held, or obtained within 30 days of hire.
