Summary
Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) are responsible for providing security and protection of travelers across all transportation sectors in a courteous and professional manner. Their duties may also extend to securing high‑profile events, important figures, and any activity that impacts our transportation systems.
Salary and BenefitsSalary range for Sitka, AK (SIT – Sitka "Rocky Gutierrez" Airport) is $58,325 to $72,103, or $27.95 to $34.55 per hour, including locality pay (32.36%) and COLA (3%). A retention incentive of 10% of adjusted pay applies, contingent on annual approval and funding.
Sign‑on bonus: up to $10,000 paid in two installments during the first 12 months of service. The amount may change or be eliminated based on operational needs.
Duties- Operate various screening equipment and technology to identify dangerous objects in baggage, cargo, and on passengers.
- Perform searches and screening, including physical interaction with passengers (e.g., pat‑downs, searches of property), bag searches, and lifting/carrying bags up to 50 lbs.
- Control terminal entry and exit points.
- Interact with the public, giving directions and responding to inquiries.
- Maintain focus and awareness while working in a stressful environment, ensuring professional decision‑making during routine and crisis situations.
- Engage in continuous development of critical thinking skills, applying risk‑based security screening protocols.
- Retain and implement knowledge of all applicable Standard Operating Procedures and adapt to new information or unexpected obstacles.
- Squat and bend repeatedly during shift.
- Lift and manipulate baggage, containers weighing approximately 50 lbs.
- Walk up to three miles during a shift and stand for prolonged periods (up to 4 hours).
- U.S. citizenship or U.S. national.
- Minimum age 18 at time of application.
- Selective Service registration required.
- Pass structured interview, drug screening, medical evaluation, and background investigation.
- Subject to post‑employment random drug and/or alcohol testing.
- Must be available for various shifts, overtime, and travel for training.
- Must be proficient in English.
- Exposure to potentially lethal devices and dangerous chemicals is inherent.
- Residence in the United States for 3 of the last 5 years; exceptions apply for certain federal or overseas service.
- Selective Service Registration Requirement for male applicants born after 12/31/59.
- Must have credit check clearance and no delinquent federal or state taxes.
- No pre‑employment travel expenses will be paid.
- Full‑time: 40 hrs/week; shift‑work any day including irregular hours and weekends.
- Split‑shift: two work shifts within 24‑hour period with at least 2 hrs between.
- Part‑time: 16–32 hrs/week; same shift‑work rules as full‑time.
To qualify for the SV‑D pay band (equivalent to GS‑5/6), you must meet one of the following:
- A) One year of full‑time work experience in the security industry, aviation screening, or as an X‑ray technician.
- B) High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or TASC high‑school equivalency certificate.
TSOs must adhere to the Master Collective Bargaining Agreement. Disallowed piercings, visible tattoos beyond the uniform, or other disallowed attire are prohibited.
