Police Officer

Police Officer is responsible for law enforcement duties, including patrol, investigations, traffic regulation, and public safety response in accordance with local, state and federal laws. The role includes assisting the public, rendering aid, and fostering community relationships.

Works under the general supervision of a Sergeant.

• Work rotating shift patrols, respond to emergency calls and incidents, including accidents, robberies, disturbances, domestic violence, intoxication, missing persons, prowlers, and drug-related issues, and patrol city streets, parks, and commercial and residential areas to deter and detect criminal activity and enforce laws.
• Perform first aid at accident scenes, interview witnesses and drivers, take measurements and draw diagrams of the crash scene, preserve evidence, and conduct follow-up investigations.
• Interview victims, witnesses and suspects, analyze crime scenes to develop leads, pursue arrests, and prepare clear, accurate reports and case files for court testimony.
• Collaborate with other departments and agencies to investigate crimes, gather evidence, prepare charges, and testify in court.
• Maintain professional and courteous communications with citizens, colleagues and dispatch; promptly report any issues or concerns to supervisors.
• Maintain readiness and physical ability to serve as a uniformed officer, pursue fleeing suspects by vehicle or on foot, remain accessible via phone or radio for emergency call-outs, and remain in compliance with all applicable laws and ordinances.
• Maintain all department-issued/assigned equipment, supplies, uniform, vehicle and facilities, photograph non-complex crime scenes, and properly submit evidence.

Supports traffic control and other policing duties, as assigned. Performs any other job-related duties, as required.

• Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
• Completion of Patrol Field Training Program.
• Completion of the Louisiana Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Academy.
• Must possess or obtain certification in:
  Less Lethal Force Option, National Academy for Professional Driving (NAPD), Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Class, Intoxilyzer 9000 Operator, CPR/First Aid.
• Equivalent combination of higher education, training, certifications or experience with other law enforcement or U.S. military agencies may be evaluated to meet Required Minimum Qualifications.
• Five (5) years of Corrections or Communications Officer experience with the Slidell Police Department equals one (1) year of Police Officer experience for lateral transfers.

NOTE:

If an individual is transferring from another agency, the certifications required must be obtained within six (6) months of the date of hire.

• Must be twenty (20) years old or older.
• Must possess a valid state driver's license without a record of suspension or revocation.
• Must be a United States citizen.
• Must meet all required physical demands.
• Must be proficient in reading and writing English.
• Must be legally able to possess a firearm.
• Must not have any felony convictions.
• Must be of good moral character.

• Fifteen (15) months probation: three (3) months Basic Training Academy + twelve (12) months probation.
• Prior law enforcement experience: must meet Louisiana P.O.S.T. certification and twelve (12) months probation after hire date.

The officer’s shift commander will complete quarterly evaluations until probation is complete.

Must meet department standards for initial hire, pass P.O.S.T. requirements, and annually pass P.O.S.T. certification for continued employment.
