OverviewIn collaboration with staff radiologists, this position independently performs advanced diagnostic ultrasound procedures following safety procedures and protocols. The role serves as a clinical mentor for junior staff and students.
Responsibilities- Verify physician order and procedure for accuracy.
- Use radiology information systems to facilitate patient care.
- Explain procedure to patient and ensure understanding.
- Operate ultrasound equipment independently to complete imaging according to protocol, including assisting radiologists in guided procedures.
- Review patient images prior to transmission to meet diagnostic quality standards.
- Complete quality control procedures in accordance with regulatory standards, performing notification/remediation as warranted.
- Assist in departmental operations such as inventory, staff schedules, equipment maintenance.
- Adapt behavior to the specific patient population, respecting privacy and communication style.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Required:
Completion of a CAHEA approved formal training program in diagnostic medical sonography.
Required:
None.
Preferred: 2 years of sonographer experience.
- Required – Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) or registry eligible (required within 1 year of hire).
- Advanced certification in area(s) of specialty according to facility need.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association.
- Proficiency in using computers, software, and web-based applications.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process.
- Knowledge of the anatomy of the liver, gallbladder, aorta, spleen, kidneys, bile ducts, and pancreas and ability to perform abdominal ultrasound and the pathology of these organs to provide radiologists with a preliminary diagnosis.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule (e.g. 24/7, weekend, holiday, on call availability).
Medium Work – Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The job requires walking or standing to a significant degree, or working at a production rate pace entailing constant pushing and pulling of materials. Duties performed routinely require exposure to blood, body fluid and tissue;
occupational risk for communicable diseases and hazardous medications or waste is present.
