Test Engineering Apprentice
John Crane, a business of Smiths Group, is a global leader in mission‑critical flow control solutions for the energy and process industries. We are seeking a Test Engineer Apprentice to join our Technology and Innovation team in Slough.
OverviewAs an apprentice you will support experienced Test Engineers and Project Engineers, performing activities such as building, testing, and developing new products, and leading Root Cause Analysis projects. You will learn mechanical build of seals, operate multiple test rigs, study the underlying mechanical principles, and gain experience in 3D modelling and prototype machining. The 4‑year programme includes rotations through our gas seals engineering solutions team.
Training& Development
- Build multiple types of seals
- Run tests on high‑performance test rigs
- Create CAD designs for continuous improvements
- Fault‑find and problem‑solve technical issues on seals and rigs
- Analyse test data and recommend engineering improvements
- Manage key projects from conception to completion, ensuring milestones and objectives are met on time and within cost
- Support and communicate effectively with internal stakeholders in JC Slough
- Education: Enrolled in the Level 6 Manufacturing Engineer Degree Apprenticeship, delivered one day a week on campus by The University of Hertfordshire. Successful completion awards a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) in Mechanical Engineering.

- 5 GCSEs, Grade 5 or above in English and Maths.
- UCAS Points: 120‑128, with a minimum of three A‑Levels at grade B or above, including a maths‑based subject and a science, technology or engineering subject.
- Engineering BTEC Level 3 with at least 120 credits at DM level or above, or considered CTec, T‑Level, or EAL Diploma in an engineering‑based subject at D (Distinction) level.
- Strong interest in engineering and a desire to learn.
- Committed to learning and working simultaneously.
- Advanced MS Office skills.
- Decision‑making ability and good influencing and teamwork skills.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work well in a team.
- Time management and organisational skills.
