Position: Critical Facilities Shift Leader/ Manager - M&E Data Center operations

The Opportunity

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Data Centre Shift Manager to join a leading provider of mission-critical engineering and facilities services, supporting a state-of-the-art data centre campus in Slough/Windsor area.

This is a key leadership position responsible for managing an engineering shift team operating within a 24/7 critical environment. You'll take ownership of planned and reactive maintenance activities, lead incident response, oversee safe systems of work and ensure the continuous operation of critical electrical and mechanical infrastructure.

The successful candidate will combine strong technical expertise with proven leadership experience and ideally hold High Voltage Authorised Person (HV AP) status.

The Role

Reporting into the Engineering Management team, you'll provide technical leadership across your shift, ensuring engineering activities are completed safely, efficiently and in accordance with operational procedures and service level agreements.

You'll coordinate engineers, specialist contractors and planned maintenance programmes whilst acting as the primary technical escalation point during your shift. This role also includes responsibility for incident management, permit control, team development and maintaining the highest standards of safety and compliance within a live mission-critical environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage an engineering shift team within a live Data Centre environment.
  • Coordinate planned preventative maintenance and reactive engineering works.
  • Ensure maximum uptime of critical electrical and mechanical infrastructure.
  • Act as the technical lead during operational incidents and emergency situations.
  • Operate as a High Voltage Authorised Person where applicable.
  • Manage Permit to Work systems and ensure compliance with safe systems of work.
  • Prepare and review switching schedules, SOPs, EOPs, Method Statements and Risk Assessments.
  • Supervise specialist contractors and ensure work is completed safely and to the required standards.
  • Respond to Building Management System (BMS) alarms and coordinate emergency response activities.
  • Ensure statutory inspections and compliance maintenance are completed to programme.
  • Monitor critical plant including:
  • HV/LV electrical distribution
  • UPS systems
  • Standby generators
  • Critical cooling systems
  • Building Management Systems (BMS)
  • Fire and Power Monitoring Systems
  • Maintain engineering documentation, logbooks and CMMS records.
  • Review contractor reports and ensure corrective actions are completed.
  • Manage engineering stores, spares and critical consumables.
  • Plan shift rotas, manage annual leave requests and return-to-work processes.
  • Deliver toolbox talks, emergency drills and technical training.
  • Mentor and develop engineers through coaching, competency assessments and ongoing technical support.
  • Promote a positive safety culture, operational excellence and continuous improvement across the engineering team.
About You

We're looking for an experienced Critical Facilities Engineer or Shift Leader with a strong technical background and proven experience leading engineering teams within mission-critical environments.

You will have:
  • Recognised Electrical qualification (NVQ Level 3, Apprenticeship, City & Guilds, HNC/HND or equivalent).
  • 18th Edition Wiring Regulations.
  • High Voltage Authorised Person (HV AP) status or significant HV operational experience.
  • Previous experience working within Data Centers, Critical Facilities or other mission-critical environments.
  • Strong understanding of:
  • HV/LV electrical systems
  • UPS systems
  • Standby generators
  • Critical cooling infrastructure
  • Building Management Systems (BMS)
  • Fire and Power Monitoring Systems
  • Experience managing Permit to Work systems and safe systems of work.
  • Excellent fault-finding and incident management skills.
  • Strong leadership, communication and team management abilities.
  • Experience supervising contractors and coordinating engineering activities within live operational environments.
  • Good IT skills with experience using CMMS and Microsoft Office.
  • PASMA and IPAF certifications.
  • Emergency First Aid at Work qualification.
  • Manual Handling training.
  • Water Hygiene (L8) knowledge.
  • Experience with commissioning, testing and system handovers.
  • Knowledge of Power Monitoring Systems (PMS) and integrated critical infrastructure.
