Medical Assistant I Certified – UNC Health – Smithfield, NC

Join UNC Health as a Medical Assistant I Certified in an outpatient Family Medicine clinic. This role provides routine clinical and administrative support to providers under clinical supervision and general direction of the designated manager for non‑clinical responsibilities.

• Performs rooming and intake process, collecting vital signs, height, weight, and data related to the patient’s reason for visit.
• Collects patient and family data, including medical and social history.
• Reviews current medication list, allergies, and preferred pharmacy.
• Assists the provider during examinations, procedures, and assessments.
• Collects specimens and performs phlebotomy.
• Administers medications under provider direction.
• Performs tests such as EKGs and eye exams under provider direction.
• Reviews patient records to determine routine health screenings.
• Ensures exam room contains appropriate supplies, equipment, and educational materials.
• Provides after‑visit instructions and educational materials to patients.
• Prepares, cleans, stocks, and maintains exam and treatment rooms.
• Sterilizes instruments.
• Assists with patient registration, check‑in/check‑out, appointment scheduling, and referrals.
• Answers clinic telephone and manages the in‑basket under provider or nurse direction.
• Assists in emergency situations as directed by a provider or nurse.

Education

• No specific requirement if other qualifications are met.
• Completion of an accredited Medical Assisting program (CAAHEP or ABHES) is strongly preferred.

Licensure/Certification

• Medical Assistant certification by AAMA, AMT, CCMA, NRCMA, or NCMA.
• Basic Life Support Certification from AHA or ARC.

Professional Experience

• Prior medical assistant or externship experience preferred.

• Ability to perform essential functions of the position.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
• Positive patient and family engagement and teamwork with staff and providers.
• Computer proficiency to document required information into the electronic medical record.
