Medical Assistant I Certified – UNC Health – Smithfield, NC
Join UNC Health as a Medical Assistant I Certified in an outpatient Family Medicine clinic. This role provides routine clinical and administrative support to providers under clinical supervision and general direction of the designated manager for non‑clinical responsibilities.
Responsibilities- Performs rooming and intake process, collecting vital signs, height, weight, and data related to the patient’s reason for visit.
- Collects patient and family data, including medical and social history.
- Reviews current medication list, allergies, and preferred pharmacy.
- Assists the provider during examinations, procedures, and assessments.
- Collects specimens and performs phlebotomy.
- Administers medications under provider direction.
- Performs tests such as EKGs and eye exams under provider direction.
- Reviews patient records to determine routine health screenings.
- Ensures exam room contains appropriate supplies, equipment, and educational materials.
- Provides after‑visit instructions and educational materials to patients.
- Prepares, cleans, stocks, and maintains exam and treatment rooms.
- Sterilizes instruments.
- Assists with patient registration, check‑in/check‑out, appointment scheduling, and referrals.
- Answers clinic telephone and manages the in‑basket under provider or nurse direction.
- Assists in emergency situations as directed by a provider or nurse.
Education
- No specific requirement if other qualifications are met.
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assisting program (CAAHEP or ABHES) is strongly preferred.
Licensure/Certification
- Medical Assistant certification by AAMA, AMT, CCMA, NRCMA, or NCMA.
- Basic Life Support Certification from AHA or ARC.
Professional Experience
- Prior medical assistant or externship experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to perform essential functions of the position.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Positive patient and family engagement and teamwork with staff and providers.
- Computer proficiency to document required information into the electronic medical record.
