Summary
Provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with professional standards. Reporting and accountable to the Nurse Manager/Director, the Clinical Nurse is responsible for coordinating and delivering patient care utilizing the nursing process in a hospital setting.
4th Floor Surgical/Orthopedics/Joint Center Description
UNC Johnston Fourth floor Surgical unit is a 33 private bed postoperative unit. The unit includes a Joint Center for Total Joint Patients and offers care to postoperative patients who have undergone Total Joint and other Orthopedic, Urology, Gynecology, General and Vascular surgeries. The unit provides opportunities to work with chest tubes, colostomies, NG tubes, wound vacs and post‑surgical care, and serves as a foundation for career development.
Responsibilities
- Education – identifies and meets personal learning needs, attends educational programs, uses patient education materials, and assesses patient/family readiness to learn.
- Evaluation of Care – identifies expected patient outcomes, seeks guidance for care plan revisions, participates in interdisciplinary discussions, and communicates essential information for continuity of care.
- Implementation – demonstrates competence in caring for patients with complex problems, performs bedside point‑of‑care testing, follows nursing standards and policies, prioritizes care, consults resources as needed, and supports discharge planning.
- Leadership – develops goals for professional growth, achieves objectives, participates in unit goal development and improvement activities, promotes cost‑effective care, provides feedback, and ensures a safe, clean and secure environment.
- Patient Assessment – synthesizes assessment data, prioritizes care needs, evaluates discharge needs, and builds relationships with families to promote advocacy.
- Planning – collaborates with patient/family for care planning, utilizes multidisciplinary resources, communicates plans, addresses cultural and ethnic issues, and prioritizes tasks.
- Research – reads relevant journals, brings ideas and questions to staff for assessment of practice applicability.
Education Requirements
- Graduation from a professional nursing school.
Licensure/Certification Requirements
- Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the day of clinical care.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification.
Professional Experience Requirements
- No prior experience required.
