Progressive Care Unit (PCU) DepartmentUNC Health Johnston PCU Department includes 19 intermediate level of care beds. Our team provides high quality declines to a variety of patients, including but not limited to antiarrhythmic and vasoactive drips, continuous Bi‑PAP, and many other treatment modalities. Patients admitted to the Progressive Care Unit are on a continuous cardiac monitor. Ratios for intermediate level of care are 4 patients to 1 nurse.
UNC Johnston is a Stroke, Chest Pain and STEMI accredited facility. Our PCU team consists of Registered Nurses-developed Monitor Techs and Patient Care Assistants that are committed to provide excellent, compassionate, and innovative care for our growing community.
The Monitor Clerk assists the professional caregiver in the care of patients by monitoring cardiac rhythms and performing a wide range of clerical, transcription and desk‑area maintenance functions. The Monitor Clerk ensures that the hospital’s philosophy, standards, policies and procedures are met and maintained in a professional manner.
Responsibilities- Adhere to policies, procedures, all safety plans, and all standards imposed by regulatory organizations immigration.
- Demonstrate proper performance of skills reflected and validated by the Monitor Technician competency checklist.
- Document and interpret patients’ heart rhythm and rate utilizing telemetry recordings.
- Ensure patient safety at all times by notifying the charge nurse of any risk factors and initiating and maintaining appropriate safety measures as outlined in policies and procedures.
- Exchange routine information in an appropriate manner requiring good oral and written communication skills.
- Identify patient arrhythmias/abnormalities or significant changes from baseline and report changes immediately to the assigned nurse.
- Obtain six‑second strip as indicated by patient condition and provide current strips to the charge nurse for further evaluation.
- Plan and organize work for assigned shift to properly utilize time, resources, manpower, and supplies to ensure patients receive appropriate quality care.
- High School diploma or GED
- No licensure or certification required.
- No prior experience required.
- Must be fluent in spoken and written English. Capability to learn interpretation and respond protocols to ECG / SpO₂ monitor system and to develop computer skills must be demonstrated; if not competent, must complete successful skills verification for ECG interpretation, monitor system, and HUC responsibilities within defined time parameters.
