Opening in early 2026, Riverside Smithfield Hospital will bring high-quality healthcare closer to home for Isle of Wight County residents. Located on a beautifully landscaped 27‑acre medical campus at 19339 Benn’s Grant Boulevard in Smithfield, the new hospital will provide modern facilities and comprehensive medical services to meet the growing needs of the community.
The 200,000‑square‑foot, three‑story facility will offer a range of essential healthcare services including an Emergency Department, Diagnostic Imaging Services, 38 Medical/Surgical beds, 12 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds and 4 Operating Rooms. We anticipate start dates to begin Fall, 2025.
OverviewWorks under the supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor/ Manager/ Director depending on the facility organizational chart. This position performs routine and special laboratory specimen collections, handling, and distributions according to established protocols and standard operating procedures, ensuring correct specimen collection, container selection, and labeling. The Laboratory Support Tech II explains specimen collection procedures and instructions to patients, nurses, physicians, and other staff.
The role may also involve performing patient EKGs, traveling to other patient off‑site locations to collect blood, and transporting specimens back to the lab depending on work site assignment. The Technician must maintain patient confidentiality and properly identify patients according to facility guidelines. Additional responsibilities include maintaining inventory, registering patients into the information system, ordering tests, printing and distributing patient reports, following all quality control and quality assurance guidelines, communicating effectively across departments, supporting accreditation standards, and assisting in training new personnel and students.
You Will Do
- Demonstrate accuracy in laboratory specimen collection, processing, and handling based on orders, including collection requirements, containers, volumes, techniques, scheduling, preservatives, patient instructions, and distribution; perform duties accurately and timely to ensure quality patient care.
- Maintain a safe environment by complying with RHS policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements that support the National Patient Safety Goals and Quality Initiatives; perform patient identification and labeling functions accurately according to policy and standard operating procedures; recognize and report variances, provide resolutions, and use appropriate protective equipment and body mechanics.
- Collaborate with providers, office staff, nurses, and other team members involved in patient care to meet the specialized needs of the patient.
- Demonstrate compliance with the department quality management program, regulatory agency requirements, and standard operating procedures to maintain accreditation with the College of American Pathologists, DNV, CLIA, and other governmental and accrediting agency standards; duties may include preventive maintenance, quality control, verifications, audits, procedure reviews, and updates.
- Demonstrate compliance with laboratory QA/QI program.
- High School Diploma or GED (Preferred)
- Program Graduate, Phlebotomy training program (Preferred)
- 1 year direct patient care with phlebotomy or specimen processing experience (Required)
